Woot said they were checking on this, then never got back to me. I'd believe the manufacturer on this, since they're the ones who would service it. Not sure how Square Trade will treat the apparent 3-month hole in coverage.

Word out to bsirvio and orpheus922:

5-7 might be a slight exaggeration, I'll time my next few cleanings and report back. I clean the gold filter, the filter housing, wipe the SS chute cover and dry everything.

Well worth it at this price. Solid construction. Some minor design flaws (the opening of the carafe is really narrow, you need to turn the thing upside down to get the last bit of coffee out, it's kinda loud when grinding) but in general it's easy to use and well made

Annndddd I'm out. Thanks for the head's up. My current maintenance on my french press is ridiculously simple and I'm not looking for something that takes longer to clean - heck, once the kettle whistles, I have coffee and a cleaned press within 7 minutes.

Constantly stops brewing to display the "Change Filter" message. I don't like standing there watching the coffee brew, but I have to in order to adjust the coffee filter and re-start the machine. Forget about using the automatic start feature - the "Change Filter" message usually interrupts the process.
Had to "de-scale" machine after two pots of coffee.
Haven't used the grinder, and temperature is fine, but total lack of dependability with filter messages leaves me thinking this was a bad purchase. I'll be sending it back.
Hope you get a better machine than I did!

I also ordered one before Christmas and had trouble at first with the de-scale message but after cleaning the back area (specifically a round disc that I think is part of the coffee grinder)that had a small smear of coffee beans on it- the message stopped. Coffee has been hot and delicious since!

Had the same problem. After some examination, the 'empty filter' message was coming on because the swinging door wasn't latched completely. I had to slam it shut and all worked fine. Needless to say since it was under warranty, I sent it back and held my breath that the new one didn't have the same problem...or other problems!

I too had the descale message right away after 3 pots. I did a vinegar clean out and haven't seen the message since. My guess is they program it to give the alert right away for some odd reason.

I have the Cuisinart version you linked above (only with a glass caraffe) and I like it but it tends to use a lot of beans to make the coffee as strong as I like it.

The Cuisinart has a blade grinder while the one sold here has a burr grinder.

That happened to me too. The descale message showed up the first time I brewed some coffee, and went away when I followed the manual's procedure for resetting the message and cleaning the coffee maker. Maybe Breville just wants to make extra-sure there's no crud in the machine when you first use it.

Can anyone who owns this machine comment on the amount of coffee it uses? A number of Amazon comments say it uses considerably more beans per pot than most, and since we use expensive beans the cost can really add up. Also, has anyone used the grinder with flavored beans? My current burr grinder works fine, but I know some can clog.

We have this and LOVE it. Yes, it is kinda loud and yes, it does use a considerable amount of beans. That being said, there are 7 (?) settings of strength. If you want it on super-strong, plan to go through some beans. If you want to use less beans, simply take the strength of the coffee down. Currently I'm using flavored beans and haven't had a single issue.

Aside from the burr grinder, which is much better than the blade grinder, the primary difference is that this one has the option to brew 2-12 cups (in single-cup increments) and has 7 levels of strength to choose from so you can have "Mmmm...I'd like some coffee" strength or "Ohmygosh!Ohmygosh!Ohmygosh!!!...I've got to stay awake 24 more hours!" strength.

I received a replacement refurbished unit from Breville and the temperature was a little better, but it was only about 160. Fresh brewed coffee should be brewed closer to 200 degrees. As I understand it, the Breville uses an aluminum brewing element, which isn't as efficient as a copper element. And that's the reason for cold coffee and the scaling issue. I'm returning my coffee maker using the American Express return guarantee.

How can you return using the AMEX return guarantee when they dont cover refurbished items?

It appears that Breville changed the grind setting and now the machine grinds the beans finer. Wondering if these units have the updated grinder setting or is woot selling the old units.

I called breville and asked them about this. they told me my machine is the new updated version, the change was not to the grinder instead it was to the timing and duration of the brew process itself. I understand Seattle coffee gear said they changed the grinder but breville themselves said that is not true.

YMMV.

I bought it with a Visa Signature card - it doesn't let me return, but what it does extend the warranty to a full year (if the first warranty is provided by the manufacturer). Pretty neat.

On the bottom of your unit, what revision does it say? I think it's always a 4-digit number. The first two I had were "1301".

drxo wrote:Replacement arrived an hour ago with defects...

Those defects were, for posterity:

1) Water-fill door hinge mount was broken on the left side, so door-opener sprung pin had nothing to push against to open the door.

2) Gold filter-basket handle had one retaining clip missing, so one end of the handle always popped out.

3) The right-side stainless shell was not properly shaped to match the rest of the unit, so it stuck up over 1/16" with a sharp edge.

Woot: thank you for the generous support, I will give Breville one more chance. My take is that it is really the fault of Breville (& their refurbisher), not of Woot, so I'll waste their time & money first. Their shop is in NY, I'm in WA, so they'll have paid 4 cross-country trips by FedEx for 18 pounds when the third unit arrives...

Got mine today and it looks like my run of good luck with refurbished products has run out. My unit has a slow, but steady, drip coming out of the bottom. At first I thought I might have overfilled it, but that doesn't seem to be the case — it's now down to the 10-cup mark and still dripping.

Also, when I was first checking things out, I found a little cylindrical piece of rubber laying in the bottom of the grinder. I'm sure that wouldn't have tasted good. It looks like it's supposed to go in a hole at the top of the bean holder. I noticed from other comments that someone else had this problem.

I made several cups of coffee and, like other complaints here, the coffee seemed rather weak and lukewarm. This was shortly after I had run a pot full of water through the machine (as they recommend) so things should have still been warm inside the brewer. Anyway, before I call to send it back I'm going to try making a few more cups with a shorter steep time. I'm thinking that with the water steeping for about 4 minutes, it's bound to cool down quite a bit. I'm curious to see what the difference will be with the shortest steep time.

I'm also surprised at how large this puppy is. It's a serious piece of gear. Frankly, I think it's probably a bit too much for the one or two cups of coffee I drink per day. Really, I got it to supplement the Mypressi espresso maker I have been using daily for the last couple of years. I was thinking how nice it would be to make a nice cup of coffee with the push of a button, but now I'm not so sure. A strong case of buyers remorse here.

jiren wrote:... LCD display kept saying "Empty Coffee Filter".

Is your filter basket door COMPLETELY closed and latched? Push closed AND up until it definitely clicks, maybe even two clicks, and won't pull open. This might clear the error.

This error can indicate the filter-basket door isn't fully closed. It seems to be a sensitive part of the machine and doesn't always latch 100%. mine would pop open if it started cold and got hot (like when making coffee...) but not when starting hot. If I push it closed AND UP, it would click a second time and stay closed; if not, it might give the above error, and/or pop open.

I had mine replaced since it seemed overly sensitive... and had other issues.

I got my Breville coffee maker last week and it is awesome. It came out of the box looking brand new and everything is working perfectly. I now wake up to one cup of brewed coffee exactly how I like it. I was nervous when the box arrived because there was hardly any packing to protect the machine, but thankfully everything was good to go out of the box. I immediately ran a full pot of vinegar/water mix, followed by two pots of plain water before making coffee. To me the noise is not an issue even if my dogs might disagree. The customization is exactly what I was looking for without having to purchase hundreds of dollars in pods or k-cups. So happy to have this machine and at a great price from Woot.

Just got my second replacement last week and after one pot of coffee it started to blink "Clean Coffee Chute". I cleaned it, even vacuumed it out and still the message appeared. I contacted Breville again, was very patient and courteous and they are sending out a brand new unit (not re-man) to replace (~$279 value). I am extremely happy with their CS but not so much on the re-man products. Oh well! We'll see how a new unit holds up.
