French Spread: Fancy Condiments

Even the stupidest Mark Millar fan knows that France is a world leader in two fields: film and food. And when you're planning a French New Wave viewing party, you're gonna need some of the good stuff. Salt, mustard, vinegar, herbs, we got 'em all right here. Viva la your next sandwich!

Have you ever been to France? Which of these would taste best on fries?

I'm just hanging out, really.

OK, NOT joking here (for once)....really am looking forward to trying some of these salts on venison. It's a staple here where I live, and I am always looking for new ways to fix it without covering it in some kind of sauce that kills the natural "gamey" taste.

aaaaaand as usual, I ended up buying other stuff as well.

I need a coupon or something, Woot. I'm a good girl, I live right, I practice random acts of kindness, and I check Woot! daily, which is making me poor, which leaves me unable to spend nearly as much as I should on the random acts of kindness.

Think of the people I could be randomly kind to, and send me a healthy-sized coupon.

It's for them that I ask. NOT me - THEM.

@shushine999 is too funny. Please give her a coupon already.

Anyway ... now I really want a sandwich, dammit. Why Woot?! Why?!

Red wine vinegar - $16.99 ($6.99 more than Woot)
Meaux mustard - $17.60 ($0.40 cheaper than Woot)
Sherry wine vinegar - $16.99 ($6.99 more than Woot)
Cognac Mustard - $17.00 (exact same)
Meaux mustard - $15.00 (exact same)
Lion mustard - $14.50 ($0.50 cheaper than Woot)

Not counting shipping.
Not getting it. Not seeing the "cheaper"-ness.

Well, technically, 40 cents is cheaper. Just not cheaper enough. : )

If I had not missed out on the drum deal, I could've gotten the ship all day deal and, somehow, that would've justified paying this much for mustard. Rats!

I've been to the airport in France. Does that count?

I think they all would taste good on fries. Great. Now I want fries, too.

The key to the comparison (for me) was the cost of shipping. To my zipcode the minimal shipping rate was nearly $14 for the 17+ oz jar! Unless one was ordering $49+ (when shipping is free) using WOOT! is still the better price - at least for me.

I first found Pommery's Meaux Mustard more than 25 years ago. I was seeking a high quality grainy mustard and this one is perfect! It's mild and is so delicious schmeared on rye and covered with ham and cheese - stands up to grilling nicely too! Using it as a rub on chicken breasts is so quick and tasty. Be aware the 17+ oz jar is a LOT of mustard, but it doesn't go bad if kept refrigerated.

Yeah they'd be great on fries. Potatoes + Mustard = tasty. Usually I save it for whole potatoes or knishes, never on pommes frites. Wish I could get that sweet mayo you get in the netherlands.

...and never been to France unless you count the French side of St Martin/Maarten as France.

Just a tip on the salts:

Find the World Spice Merchants website (google search it, it's in Seattle). They ship all of their spices anywhere, and I can tell you as a local, what they charge for higher quality salts is a damn sight less than you'll pay here.
