The Old College Try
Craig was going through some boxes in his parents' basement, looking for any clue that would explain the mysterious "YAM" note that his Aunt Sylvia had presumably left in her abandoned apartment.
He didn't find any, but he did find a big plastic storage container with all his old college gear.
"Mom! Why would you keep all this old stuff?" he yelled to the top of the stairs.
As he dug through the neatly folded pile, memories of his glory days started flooding back. The comforter was still in there, as was the flat sheet. But only one of the four pillowcases remained, and the fitted sheet was completely M.I.A.
He smiled as he recalled the time he and his roommates had turned their entire house into a giant fort for that party. It was such a great night. Well, until three of the partygoers got so drunk that they decided to "parachute" from the third floor window with nothing but those pillowcases. Unbelievably, they all made it out relatively unscathed, and they quickly rose to the ranks of Party Gods.
"Sheesh. It's amazing I even made it out alive."
All of the bath towels, hand towels and washcloths were there. But they were thread-bare. He unconsciously wiped his hands on his jeans when he thought about all the things he had mopped up with those towels.
The mattress protector. Now that's something his freshman roommate could have used. He seemed like a pretty normal guy at first. But then at the beginning of the second semester, he removed all his sheets from the bed and just slept on the dingy dorm room mattress for the rest of the year. Craig shivered at the thought of all the gross things that guy must have been rolling around on all those months.
Inside the mesh draw-string laundry bag he found the rest of his stuff: the shower caddy, soap dish, toothbrush holder and bed-side storage unit. Well, everything except for the bed risers.
He wondered if they were still encased at the archeology department? One night, he and his roommates had painted cryptic symbols all over them and buried them in one of the dig sites. They must have done a good job, because the last thing he had heard, some of the faculty were still trying to determine their origin.
Craig snorted at the ridiculousness of it all. "Aaaand that's why I studied Poli-Sci."
