Commitment Issues

Bamboo or not to bamboo? That is the question.

Brant turned the key in the lock and opened up the front door approximately three inches before hitting something that was blocking the entry.

"Lesley! What's going on?" he yelled into the apartment. "I can't get in. Something's blocking the door."

"Oh! Sorry, hon!" she said as she ran to the door to assist. "I'm just trying out this new Core Bamboo XL Cutting Board."

"On the floor? Right in front of the door?" Brant questioned, confused.

"OK, you got me," admitted Lesley. "I've been hearing all these great things about bamboo flooring, but I didn't want to shell out the money for it until I try it out first."

"Lesley, this all-purpose cutting board is ideal for food preparation, presentation and serving. But not for use as flooring."

"Well, I know that it's not exactly the same thing, but I think it'll give us a pretty good idea what the apartment would be like with a durable and practical alternative material like bamboo," said Lesley.

"I guess," Brant said. "But can you just make sure you keep it from blocking the door from now on?"

"Sure, hon," Lesley said with a smile.

Over the course of the next couple of days, Lesley kept her promise. No cutting boards blocked the entry or exit through any doors. What Brant didn't expect, however, was that he'd stub his toe on another one while getting out of bed in the morning and fumbling for the light in the dark.

"Sorry, hon!" Lesley said. Just wanted to see what it would feel like stepping down on it first thing out of bed on a cold morning like this.

Brant also did not expect to almost slip and break his neck when he stepped out of the shower onto another one.

"Sorry, hon!" Lesley shouted from the bedroom when she overheard his cursing. "They say that prolonged soaking isn't recommended for bamboo. How would you say it held up just now as a bath mat?"

But the final straw was when he walked into the kitchen one evening and found Lesley on top of the counter, dropping their good knives onto another cutting board.

"Lesley! You almost cut off my pinky toe! What are you doing?" he yelled.

"Oops! Sorry, hon. They say that bamboo is harder than most traditional hardwoods, so I just wanted to see if they'd get nicked or scratched on the off chance I might accidentally drop a knife on them. So far so good!" she said enthusiastically with a thumbs up.

"Lesley," Brant said calmly but assertively, trying to control his frustration. "Just buy the darn flooring already!"

"I dunno," she said. "I'm not convinced yet. What do you think of cork? Cuz I have a whole stockpile from wine club that I could cut up and …"
