What do cooking and customer service have in common? They're both an art form.

Jimmy looked up just as Maurice came sprinting around the counter.

"Pssst! Hey look who it is!" he said excitedly, but under his breath as he made a sort of jerking motion with his head over his shoulder.

"I think this would be an excellent learning experience for the new kid, don't you think?" said Jimmy, making the same head motion over his shoulder at Lisa.

Maurice was so excited, he actually jumped up and down and clapped like a giddy school girl. "Yes! Yes! Yes! This is gonna be soooo good. I can't wait to add it to the file!"

Jimmy opened his eyes wide and pursed his lips as a signal to Maurice, who collected himself and turned with a big, phony smile, just in time to come face-to-face with Lesley.

"Good afternoon, Ma'am! Welcome to Ruttles. Lisa here will be happy to help you with anything that you need."

Lisa looked up when she heard her name, right before Jimmy shoved her forward. "I whaaaa … hey! Oh, excuse me. Hi. What I mean is, hello. How can I help you?"

Lesley smiled politely at her. "I'm looking for a wedding gift for some friends of mine, and I was thinking about this Cuisinart 11-piece cookware set. Can you tell me a little about it?"

Lisa nodded and started to speak, but she was interrupted but a sudden burst of stifled laughter from Maurice, who was pretending to fold hand towels a few feet away.

Lisa cleared her throat and continued. "Well, the set includes both 1- and 2-quart covered sauce pans, a 2-quart steamer insert, a 3-quart covered sauté pan, a 6-quart covered stock pot, and two skillets, one 8" and one 10".

"Mmm hmm," said Lesley. "Now, the lids on these. They aren't going to let out a lot of hot steam while you're cooking with them, will they?"

"Here we go," said Jimmy within earshot. Lisa hesitated for a minute, but Lesley hadn't seemed to notice.

"No, Ma'am. The break-resistant glass covers are tight-fitting to seal in moisture and nutrients while you cook."

"Oh boy. Now you've done it," said Maurice out of the corner of his mouth.

"Now I see something about France on here. Were these made in France?" asked Lesley.

Maurice started laughing so hard, he had to walk away.

"What that means, Ma'am, is that this cookware is so elegant, it was inspired by the kitchens of France."

Jimmy had walked out from behind the counter and was now gesturing dramatically while muttering nonsense words with an exaggerated French accent behind Lesley's back.

"Oui oui! Croissant! Gerard Depardieu!"

When Lesley looked away for a second, Lisa glared at him angrily. She quickly replaced the glare with an enthusiastic smile when Lesley turned back.

"And can you explain to me why I see the word aluminum on here?" asked Lesley. "I thought these were supposed to be stainless steel?"

This time, Maurice and Jimmy didn't make a peep. They just stared intently, as if they were anticipating a nuclear meltdown at any moment.

"Sure," said Lisa. "You see, they are made of 18/10 stainless steel. But there is pure aluminum encapsulated in the base. It helps the cookware heat faster and more evenly."

Lesley was silent. Lisa just stared back at her with a smile. Jimmy winced and closed his eyes like you would do if you were about to get slapped. And Maurice was nervously biting the nails on both hands at the same time.

"OK great!" Lesley said finally. "I'll take them!"

Both Jimmy's and Maurice's jaws dropped open simultaneously, and they looked at each other, confused.

When Lisa had finished ringing up the order, and Lesley had left without incident, Jimmy and Maurice ran over to her.

"And just what the hell was THAT all about?" said Maurice.

"Yeah, seriously. What exactly do you think you're doing?" said Jimmy.

Lisa started to stammer out a response. "What … what do you mean? I don't know what you …"

But Jimmy scoffed and shook his head. Maurice just threw his hands up and walked away.
