Taking One For The Team

Who was that masked man with the distinguished palate?

It was a simple in-and-out job. Get in, grab the Kuhn Rikon 4th Burner Pot, and get out. Yes, technically it was breaking and entering. But it was also a public service. No court in the world would convict him if they knew firsthand what terrible atrocities everyone in the building had been subjected to.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I give you Exhibit A: Carrot Soup."

Even if he did get caught, he knew his acquittal would be swift. Not guilty on account of self-defense. Then,  in one of those over-dramatic turn of events that you see in those cop shows, Pamela would immediately be taken into custody to face charges for her cooking. Cruel and unusual nourishment. Assault with a deadly palate. Murder in the culinary degree.

"Ms. Pamela Raines, I hereby sentence you to a life of takeout without the possibility of dinner parties."

The crowd of onlookers would breathe a collective sigh of relief. Men would high-five him. Women would weep and vow to name their first-borns after him. He'd be a community hero.

He looked up and down the hallway. Empty. Just as you would expect it to be at 2 a.m. He slipped on the ski mask and dropped to his knees in front of Pamela's door. He had the lock picked and was inside in seconds.

He only had to open two cabinets before he found the handy 3-quart multi-pot. He grabbed it by the silicone coated handle and tucked the lid with the two sizes of draining holes and the convenient pouring spout under his arm. He was halfway back to the door when he whacked his knee on an end table in the dark. He was able to stifle his yelp of pain, but the sudden impact launched the steamer basket out of the pot and it crashed to the floor.

The noise awoke Pamela. Before he knew it, she had rounded the corner, still wiping the sleep from her eyes. Of course she screamed when she saw him. His first instinct was to drop the pot and run out the door. But he had come this far. He wasn't about to fail. He grabbed the first thing he saw, a porcelain cat doorstop, and launched it at her. When she ducked, it crashed through the balcony window and distracted her just enough for him to get away.

Now safely in the stairwell, he removed the ski mask and tossed it with the pot down the garbage chute. On his way down, he met a couple of plain-clothed cops. How had they gotten there so fast? The younger one ran past him and up to Pamela's floor with his weapon drawn. The older one stopped him, flashed his badge and said, "We're investigating a possible B&E. You haven't seen a guy in a ski mask come through here, have you?"

He put on his best concerned expression and shook his head. The officer seemed satisfied and proceeded up the stairwell.

He smiled as he walked the few flights down to his floor and turned the key in his door. For now, the building was safe from Pamela's culinary catastrophes. Mission. Accomplished.
