The Cutting Edge Of Gift Giving

Nothing says “I’m sorry” like trusting someone with a couple stabbing implements.

Jimmy smiled brightly as the salt-and-pepper haired gentleman walked up to the counter with his purchase. “Good afternoon, sir! Find everything you were looking for today?”

“Yeah, sure,” he replied, placing a box on the counter. “Say, that blonde woman who works here isn’t around, is she?”

Jimmy fought the urge to roll his eyes. Lately, there’d been an uptick in men coming into the store wanting “help” from Lisa which, while good for sales, was beginning to put him off. Jimmy kept his composure and continued smiling, saying through gritted teeth, “I’m afraid she isn’t, sir, but I’d be happy to assist you.” In his head, he ended the sentence with pervert.

“No problem, buddy. Say, do you guys do gift wrapping? Like, with a bow and a card and such?”

“Not normally, but you’re in luck! Ruttles has recently started up its Holiday Gift Wrapping service for the season!”

The man shook his head. “It’s not really for Christmas. It’s more of an ‘I’m a bit of a jerk’-type thing.”

“I understand, sir,” Jimmy said. “In trouble with the misses, huh?” Probably from hitting on pretty sales people in department stores, he thought.

“You could say that. Sort of.”

“Well, don’t worry. We’ve got a nice plain red paper for your conciliatory...” Jimmy brought the box over to the scanner and looked at it. “Knives?” He almost gave the man a puzzled look before correcting himself and grinning again. “Knives! The perfect way to apologize! No problem.”

“She’s a beginning cook.”

“Well, of course! And any home chef would love a ceramic santoku and paring knife set like this. They’ve got a rock-like edge that doesn’t roll, a razor-like blade that retains its sharpness thanks to Kyocera’s advanced ceramic, and all at half the weight of other...”

“I get it, they’re good knives. That’s why I’m buying them.”

Jimmy’s smile grew thin as he pressed his lips together in frustration. “Right. How silly of me. Well, we’d be happy to print a lovely tag for you if you’d just give me the name of the recipient.” It’s probably Candi or Misti or something else that ends in I, Jimmy thought.

“Pamela,” the man said. “Her name is Pamela.”
