Watch Your Step

A good ladder will help lift you up and never let you fall. If only more people could be like that.

Danielle and Craig sat in silence in the hospital's Emergency Room. Craig stared at her purple, swollen ankle covered in makeshift ice packs as it lay elevated in the wheelchair she sat in, and wondered what normal dates were like.

"I'm sorry," he told her.

"Could be worse," she said with a shrug. "Another close family member of yours could've gone missing."

"I'm serious."

"I know, Craig. I wasn't sure you were serious after that sixteenth time you said it, but this last time totally convinces me. Totally." She patted his shoulder. "I told you it's not your fault."

"It was my ladder, Danielle."

"Which I decided to climb. Me. I figured if I changed the light bulb you were trying to get at when I got there, we'd save some time and you might think 'Dang, here's a lady that can perform minor home maintenance without injuring herself.' Guess I screwed that up."

Craig chuckled. "It would've been pretty hot."

"And I can't even blame it on the ladder! That's the worst part. That aluminum Little Giant Alta-One 17' Ladder is about as sturdy as a stone elephant."

"It should be. I adjusted it into just the right configuration for the job. All the rubberized feet were on the floor. Heck, the thing's rated to hold up to 250 pounds without trouble, which HOLY CRAP I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST SAID THAT I'M AN IDIOT." Craig shut his eyes hard and shook his head.

"Oh please. I think I totally get the credit for ruining tonight's outing, regardless of anything stupid said between when I fell and when we get out of here." Danielle grinned and took his hand. "It was awfully sweet of you to carry me out of the building like that, though. For that, I might let you get to first base. Maybe."

Craig raised his eyebrow. "Really? I mean, um, you know, that's cool, I guess."

"Just do me a favor," she said. "The next time I come over, if there is a next time depending on whether or not we want to risk bodily harm or a close family member's disappearance, get rid of the Roomba. I don't ever want to slip on that thing again."
