One Last Pass

Cut away the old grass for autumn, sure. But it doesn't mean you have to forget the glorious summer lawns gone by.

Some of Rod's boxes were waiting out front when the realtor appeared. She was only slightly apologetic, but Rod wasn't going to complain. Pamela had convinced him that if he wanted to sell the house, he needed to just smile, step aside, and stare in the opposite direction of any woman until the contract was signed. Rod couldn't find a single thing wrong with that plan.

But the movers were late, and so he had more time than he'd expected. It was a sunny day, so he'd carried a few things out to the driveway, just to kill time and feel like he was doing something. He leaned on his Troy-Bilt 18" Reel Mower and rolled it a little, remembering... well, nothing, because it was pretty much brand new.

He'd bought the mower because Sylvia took the electric one, and he was getting tired of paying the kid next door to trim the grass. The Troy-Bilt was eco-friendly, and Rod cared about things like that. He also cared about the bushel bag, because he was not going to rake up all the clippings.

Rod pushed the Troy-Bilt 18" Reel Mower back and forth over the corner close to the house. Inside, he could hear the realtor laughing. Rod supposed that was a good sign. But it was hard to walk away from this place. There was the corner where he'd hidden to leap out at Sylvia on their very first dinner outside. There was the empty space where he'd tried to weld a birdbath and somehow caught the side of the house on fire. He hoped they didn't notice the difference in paint. And there, along the shady strip to the left of the house, was the grass he'd always ignored. At first, because he forgot about it. Later, because it annoyed Sylvia. Now... well. There was no reason to ignore it now.

The realtor wasn't sure why Rod decided to mow the lawn while she was trying to sell the house. She supposed it wasn't her place to say anything. It just would have been nicer if he'd left his shirt on, at least until she was done with the tour.
