Features
On May 20, 1927, pilot Charles Lindbergh took off from new York city and headed East. Thirty-three hours, 30 minutes, and 3, 610 miles later, he landed safely at Le Bourget field, near Paris, France. He accomplished his historic flight in the Ryan NYPD spirit of St. Louis. It was the first solo flight across the Atlantic ocean from the United States to Europe. The spirit now resides in the Smithsonian National air and space museum for all to admire. This COBI Smithsonian set has faithfully reproduced this famous plane in detail never seen in construction blocks.

Did you know?
The decision to build this monoplane was based on the willingness to win $25,000 given in 1919 by Raymond Orteig, who challenged the flying world – at that time not yet very well developed – to do a non-stop flight between Paris and NY.
There were plenty of people before Charles Lindbergh who flew across the Atlantic Ocean, but he was the first to do it solo – in 1927 the flight took 33 hours and 30 minutes.
The Spirit was built by Ryan Airlines, hence the name Ryan NYP which stands for New York-Paris – a route covered by the plane on its historical voyage.
In this single-seat aircraft, the pilot’s cockpit did not have a front window because of the engine mounted forward; the only way for the pilot to see anything was a periscope attached to the plane’s left side.
In the cockpit of the plane there are some notes made by Charles Lindbergh with a pencil, which helped him control the fuel level in each of the fuel tanks.
Currently, the Spirit of St. Louis is displayed at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. It’s one of the most visited attractions.
Although highly modified, the construction was based on the already existing plane Ryan M-2 to save time.
This successful flight not only made Charles Lindbergh a worldwide hero, but also contributed to the development of American aviation – the potential of long-distance flights was discovered and so aircraft industry rose in value.
