Features

The USS Constitution is an American three-mast frigate with an oak hull. It's the oldest sailing and active service ship in the world. Her name commemorates the United States Constitution. The ship won its greatest glory during the war in 1812. The constitution's crew defeated four British frigates during three separate engagements. She earned then a pseudonym 'old Ironsides' because the fire from enemy ships could not penetrate her oak hull.

Interesting Facts

The USS Constitution was given her name by President George Washington after the Constitution of the USA, she was the third out of six original frigates constructed with Naval Act authorization.

Built in 1797, she is the world’s oldest naval vessel that is still afloat – with breaks for restorations and repairs.

Although officially rated a 44-gun frigate, she often had over 50 guns, all guns and cannons were portable (unlike modern ships with permanent armament) and could be exchanged between ships according to commander officer’s liking. Hence, no record of changes had been kept.

She gained her nickname Old Ironside after the War of 1812 – she then fought and defeated the British vessel HMS Guerriere, this is when an American sailor saw enemy cannonball shots were bouncing off the ship and remarked that her sides were made of iron. In fact, however, she was so durable thanks to three layers of live oak and white oak placed alternately.

In 1947, to commemorate Constitution, the United States Postal Service issued a stamp for her 150th anniversary.

You can visit USS Constitution Museum in Boston where you can board the ship and learn more about her history.
