Features
Famous Leighton painting, Flaming June. The original masterpiece was created in 1895. Widely considered to be Leighton's magnum opus, it is full of symbolism (the toxic oleander branch at top right is said to symbolize the fragile link between sleep and death). Sir Frederic Leighton, (1830 - 1896), was an English painter and sculptor. He was educated in London and Florence and is associated with the Pre-Raphaelites movement and artists. President of the Royal Academy from 1878 to his death, his works depicted historical, biblical and classical subject matter and his paintings represented Britain at the great 1900 Paris Exhibition. Today this tribute painting has been recreated to near perfection: from the same stunningly rich colours used to the realism of the transparent material worn by the sleeping woman and her surroundings.
