While living in Arles, van Gogh took a trip to Saintes Maries de la Mer on the Midterranean Sea, where he granted himself his own wish to paint a seaside of sand, sea, and sky. The combination of a high horizon and boats close to the top of the edge of the frame draws the eye to the choppy sea in the foreground of the image.
