Is it possible to love a kitchen utensil?
By bogart the consumer on Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2011
This is a great addition to any kitchen. Dinner preparation is more rewarding when you've got the right tools, and this butcher block has made me realize that a nice, robust, solid surface adds a new element of joy to the simple act of chopping vegetables or trimming meat. This block is immovable. It rests on four meaty, cushioned feet, and when you chop veggies you get a satisfying ker-clunk as your knife makes contact with the rich, nutty-brown surface. My kitchen now sounds like a stage set from Iron Chef when I'm working with a knife. Plus, the thick board raises your work surface by three inches for a more natural arm-angle when you're doing your food preparation. The board is beautiful. The rich bamboo pattern takes on depth and character with the application of a few drops of mineral oil, and the butcher block is so charming that you don't want to hide it away in a cupboard. It's also so heavy that you really don't want to wrestle it off of a high shelf. All credit to the designers at Totally Bamboo who took the care to balance the board so well that you can prop it on its side when not in use, and it balances perfectly -- not a hint of wobble or wiggle. Tucked off to the side -- or up against the backsplash -- it takes up no counter space, and it brings color and beauty into my kitchen.I added a couple of photos to the product page. You can see how the board dwarfs a chef's knife and stands on its own. I recommend this butcher block to anyone who appreciates a solid work surface and good craftsmanship. This is a hygienic instrument for food preparations, and it's gentle on your knives. It's everything that I wanted.

I was very happy and surprised on how heavy it was
By Lydia Daily on Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2017
I'm writing this review a few days short of 30 days so that I can provide a proper review. When I got my cutting board, I was very happy and surprised on how heavy it was. I was looking for that. Also that once I placed it on my counter top, it was slightly unevenly balanced. I checked the legs of board and saw black felt type velvety material glued to the bottom legs. For the price I paid, I thought it would be better material than that. I have used this board, every single day. The pictures I saw of the board posted by reviewers looks no different than my board. I have not oiled the board as it was suggested to get a darker shade but that is no concern of mine.I gave this board 3 stars mostly because of the smell that emits from the board. When dry, I don't smell anything but when it's time to wash the board and in the process of drying, I get a strong "chemical" type smell comes from the board. I know folks will say its the glue causing the smell but really, I've had a previous butcher type board for 10+ years and never got a smell that I'm getting and it concerns me. This is not right. I don't know if oiling the board will stop or "mask" the smell from emitting but since I'm experiencing this scent, i no longer feel 100% comfortable with the board knowing meats, fruits and vegetables have been slathered all over this board. It took me several months to find a board, this board, and now, I'm in the market again, no longer wanting end grain. I need something more solid with lower percentage of glue/chemicals or maybe all together a completely different material.
