The acrylic shad is plastic. But it looks good and unless you touch the shade you would not know. The remote takes AAA batteries.

Very good lamp, however after a while remote stopped working and i had to take remote portion out and directly connect it. worked for many years after that and still works :))) no remote but oh well. nothing is eternal :)
