*** Disregard the Negative Reviews - Installed Properly This Is Amazing!!!
By ATT on Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2017
I've been trying to understand all the negative reviews of this item. I don't quite understand it and I have to put it down to people not understanding how to install it properly. This is a sturdy metal gate with two extensions, one for either side. I have a 43.5" opening to my back hallway. I needed an extra wide gate so i picked one up at a local store. It was very high and was very, very hard to step over. I decided I needed one with a gate for walking through. I found this one here on Amazon but balked when reading some of the reviews about it being "a plastic piece of junk", "unsteady and easily pushed over", etc. I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt since I'm on prime and could receive it quickly and make my own judgement. I figured I'd return either the one I bought locally or this one depending on how it went. Installation: For my opening (again 43.5") I needed one of the extenders. They are two different sizes and I used the bigger of the two. Maybe some of the people who had stability issues with the gate used the wrong size extender? IDK... So the gate has these threaded rods you spin to close the gap between the extender and the wall. They are really easy to adjust because they have adjustment knobs built right in. NOTE*** - People mentioning that the gate and latch don't line up may have not realized that they do have a gap but once it is tightened in place, that gap closes up. So looking at the gate out of the box you could say it doesn't line up properly but once tightened up and in place it's lined up perfectly. Within 5 minutes I had this thing tightened up and installed just fine. The swinging gate works like a champ and the locking mechanism is easy to use. I did read about people having problems with the latch but you basically just pull back the latch release on top and lift the gate up to open. You have to lift it because it has a piece that goes over the bottom rail to keep the gate steady on the bottom end. One thing I didn't do is screw the wall receivers into the wall. It comes with screws to do this but I wanted to check out the functionality before screwing them in. To anyone saying that a child or anyone else could knock this over, obviously didn't screw the wall receivers into a solid wooden part of the wall. If they had, you'd have to bend the entire gate to get it out of those and "knock it over". So.... Sorry for the long review but I hate seeing products get slammed for peoples failings in installation. I seriously wanted to pass on this item but I'm very glad I didn't. Worth the price and I won't be face planting in the middle of the night headed to the bathroom anymore.

Difficult to open/close
By Cletis on Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2023
This gate is sturdily made. The pieces fit together well and easily; assembly is quick and easy. It looks like it will hold up to frequent use with no problems. Like other gates of this type, there is no need to screw the provided mounting cups into the walls; the rubber mounting pads will grip the walls just fine. (NOTE: THIS IS ONLY TRUE IF USING THE GATE WITH SMALL PETS WHO WON'T PUT A LOT OF FORCE ON THE GATE. IF THERE'S ACTUALLY A BABY OR TODDLER YOU'RE TRYING TO MANAGE, THEN FOR SAFETY'S SAKE; PLEASE USE THE LOCATING CUPS.) The manufacturer says it will fit spaces from 29" to 49". And while it will definitely fit a 29" space and a 49" space, it will not adjust to fit all widths in between. The space I need to span is 39" wide, and that is not a width that this product will handle. I ended up having to move my stove around in my kitchen so it could be used as one of the two "walls" between which the gate is mounted. The open/close/latch situation is not the best design; it's a slide-then-lift-then-pivot operation. It is difficult to operate with one hand, and impossible to operate with anything already in your hand, due to the need to grip the barrel lock to slide it back before lifting. (I actually mount ours more loosely than the manufacturer intends; that way, the locking barrel doesn't extend far enough onto the stationary part to actually lock -- and I can therefore open it by simply lifting and pivoting, which is orders of magnitude easier to do than the way the thing is actually designed to be used. NOTE THAT THIS SEVERELY DEGRADES THE GRIPPINESS OF THE GATE AGAINST THE WALLS; ESPECIALLY WHEN NOT USING THE MOUNTING CUPS -- SO IT IS VERY NOT SAFE TO DO THIS IF YOU ARE USING THIS GATE TO WRANGLE A TODDLER.) I prefer the design used in one of our other gates, which uses a normal hinge design and includes an actual latch. Party of my dissatisfaction with the latch design is tied to my last (and nit-pickiest) complaint: it's loud. We have another gate with an identical metal tube construction, but its operation is pretty quiet. The need to lift and drop the gate in other to open or close it results in unnecessary clanking, which causes the test of the gate to ring like a bell -- which is exacerbated by the extra width of the echoing structure. I doubt that many others will care so much about noise, but the gate's location near our bedroom means that when I'm puttering around in the middle of the night going through this gate over and over, I'm having to take extra care to operate it particularly slowly and carefully so as not to wake the wife. So my overall rating: Meh.
