Impressed so far

The heater arrived yesterday & I put it to use the second I unboxed it. I needed a heater with a blower for my living room. I also needed it to be location-flexible, so I chose this one since the reviews were good. It looks like the best heater of its type in my price range. I got the version with a humidifier on it in case I end up needing that, but I don't currently have it attached. I can add it later if I need to. It's about the size of one of those fabric storage cubes, if you've ever seen those, but slightly taller. I saw in the description that it had wheels, but it didn't click with me until I was setting it up. These are smooth rolling wheels that make it a breeze to roll around wherever you need it. You can make small adjustments with your foot, even. That said, if you have kids or pets, it moves easily enough that you'd want to eyeball it frequently to make sure it hasn't bumped into a dangerous position. It has a fairly long cord which adds to the placement flexibility. It's really nice looking for a heater. They aren't kidding when they say it's touch safe. I haven't felt the box heat up at all. It doesn't even get warm. Since it's a new heater, I've been feeling the cord periodically to make sure that's not getting hot either & the cord is staying nice & cool. I've mostly been using it on ECO & it's run for several hours non-stop & all is still cool. The controls on the front are intuitive & SUPER EASY with nice big buttons. The controls aren't fiddly at all. One of the things I really like about the control panel is that if you press the down arrow & the MODE button at the same time, it'll tell you the ambient air temperature of the room it's in, so you can see how you're doing as far as heating up the room. It's easy to press both at the same time because the large buttons are place in good proximity to each other. You could do it with two hands, if you needed to, but my hands are tiny & I can do it with one hand. And finally, my FAVORITE part of using this heater is that it's got a dual heating system inside. Sure, it's got the blower that works very well, but you're not only heated by the blower. It's got an infrared-type system too which helps you *feel* warmer while it's gradually heating your room. My little 100+ year old house is super drafty & cold. The heater has been on about an hour & the room has only come up a few degrees so far, but I feel warmer & more comfortable because of the infrared thing. For instance, when I got up this morning, the room temperature on the heater said 53 (verified as accurate by an actual thermometer in the room). It's been about an hour & the room temp is now 58 -- which is still pretty cold for a house, but I don't feel like it's only 58. I'm not grabbing for my blanket. I'm not directly in front of the heater either (sorta off to the side). This feeling warmer in a still cold room is very impressive. The point of heating is to feel more comfortable & this heater accomplishes this task much better than if it only had a blower. I can feel on my legs that the cold is still out there on the fringes, but it's not biting me -- if that makes sense. Would I buy this heater again? Absolutely. I feel like I got a good value & that the heater will last a long time. It's put together very well & there's no part of it that doesn't feel like it'll last. I'm very impressed. I'll update if any of this changes.

The good, the bad, & the misleading...
By Maniac on Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2012
First, I want to start off with some background as to why I made this purchase. My parents have two Edenpure heaters in their house. One is on the enclosed back porch and the other is in the family room in the basement. The heat coming out of them is mild and not extremely hot. You can barely hear them at all and they heat very evenly without peaks and valleys in temperature. Very nice! Obviously that played a factor in my searching for a supplemental heater for the baby's room for the upcoming winter. (I wanted something that would provide efficient supplemental, even heating, and be safe to touch with our baby.) I was sold on the Quarts infrared heaters with the steady heating and efficiecy. (like my parents have) I still am. BUT, this heater only has one infrared quartz tube. Many others have four to six. I didn't realize this until I read the book when this heater was delivered. There is a PTC heating element in this heater too. I knew that going in, but didn't understand what that was. In case you don't know what that is in layman terms, it is a highly efficient ceramic heater. It varies its own power to maintain a consistant temperature and will not get mind melting hot like those cheap ceramic heaters. I didn't find out what "PTC" was until an hour ago. I was really looking forward to the steady heat that the quartz heaters produce, but what I got was something different. Immediately after turning on the heater the temperature blowing out of this unit was hot. It was hot enough to burn my skin if held in front of it after seven to ten seconds. I have to admit at first I was impressed, but then realized that this was no typical quartz infrared heater and this wasn't what I was looking for in a heater. After reading I realized that I basically received an efficient ceramic heater. Very disappointing... Don't get me wrong, this heater works and works quickly. But, I am a little apprehensive having my baby crawling around the same room as this. The box doesn't get hot, but the air blowing out of it does... Very misleading and disappointing... With that said, there are nice features. You can set timer for how long you want the heater on. It has a low and a high speed. Also, you can set a thermostat so that when it gets cold, it will kick on and shut off. However the thermostat is not the best. It will kick on two degrees below the set point and shut off 4 degrees above the set point. For example, if you set the temperature to 68 degrees the thermostat will not engage until your room reaches 66 degrees. (-2 below the set mark) Once the room warms up, the heater will shut off at 72 degrees. (+4 above 68) So what you get is a room that the temperature varies quite a bit. So much for that steady heat... I don't know how efficient or inefficient it will be, but it is only a supplemental heater for my son's bedroom on the cold side of our house. So if you are looking for a heater that will heat up quickly with a few handy features this is nice. It might be one of the nicest, fancy, mostly ceramic heaters you can get... If you are looking for a nice quartz infrared heater that provides steady temperatures, blows mild heat, and won't burn your child or possibly your house if something flamable gets up against the fan for an extended time don't get this.
