Excellent high quality product so far, WAY BETTER than a brush for de-shedding. I would easily pay double the price.

I can only say I used this for one day, so this is simply an initial review. But after visiting my local pet store, (here in Arizona in the hot summer), for a rabies shot for my 2 year old Golden Retriever, I had more than a few minutes to talk to some of the staff. I have owned 2 golden retrievers in the past, and they have all had long hair. I never considered having them shaved, but I wanted to help with the shedding. I asked 3 different workers, separately, what product they would use besides a simple brush, and the answer I got was the FURminator. Besides my long hair Golden Retriever, I have 2 labs (one silver lab and one yellow lab), both of these have short hair, but they still shed quite a bit in the summer. The staff said the "long hair" version would work fine on the lab's short fur. Also, one person who works in the grooming department said she has used her FURminator for 2 years and said it will last. The pet shop charged $55 dollars and would not discount the price even after I offered to split the difference in price from Amazon ($23), so ultimately I purchased it from Amazon. The bottom line: The initial quality is exceptional, the handle is solid and weighty...it is not cheap plastic. I got the Medium size for Long hair and it works fine to get in and around curved areas on all my 3 dogs (the Wide size has a wider head). Only my oldest lab (6 years old) would sit still to be brushed with a regular brush to help with the shedding. BUT, ALL 3 of my dogs seemed to really like this product. It was an OBVIOUS improvement over a brush! My advice on how to use: Get a chair, a bucket, and of course the dog. Use small strokes around a certain area and it took me about 4 to 5 strokes to "fill up" the trimming end, and then you simply press the . You will be amazed at how quickly and easily it removes fur from the undercoat. It's really satisfying to know that your pet enjoys this (my oldest lab REALLY knows this is helping to make him cooler), and when I do the younger dogs they enjoy it also, but he tries to "bud in" for more. I took me about 10 to 20 minutes to do each dog, and mostly they are happy to be groomed this way. When you finish, you will absolutely notice that their fur is smooth and silky to the touch. I can't say if it will significantly decrease the amount of shedding yet, but I can't imagine it won't...TOTALLY worth it so far!

Strips undercoat and damaged top coat.

I wanted to love this brush as I've heard great things about it... Unfortunately I can't give it good reviews. I have a Golden Retriever pup who has always loved getting her hair brushed but, of course, being a Golden Retriever, she sheds a ton so I thought I'd try this... I've never regretted trying a product this much. Luckily the results are temporary. I started brushing her and just about instantly she acted like I was hurting her and started trying to get away from me... At first I thought she was playing... She cried out, nipped at my hand and tried to run. She is the sweetest and gentlest dog I have ever had. I've never seen her act like this. It quickly became clear I was hurting her. I looked her over and it didn't seem to be scratching her but I did realize that it was destroying her hair, cutting it... In the places I used it, her hair is half the length of the rest... Not just her undercoat, her top coat too. For the record, I was not aware this brush would destroy her undercoat either. I thought it would just remove any hair already loose or about to shed, not her entire undercoat. I only realized that it was meant to remove the undercoat when I looked it up and read up on it. It should definitely state somewhere in big bold print that it removes the undercoat. You can't just expect people to know this isn't just a great brush to reduce shedding, which is what I've always thought when I have heard it mentioned casually by random people and in stores about being great for shedding. Anyway, this is incredibly disappointing because she has gorgeous wavy hair that is longer than most Golden's her age... But now she has this patch on her back or fur that's barely an inch and because it did also remove her undercoat, that newly cut short hair is coarse and it definitely makes her coat feel and look awful in that spot... I wish I could get a good picture of it but she is a very light Golden (almost white) and I've not been able to. I'm quite disappointed; This isn't just disappointing on a pet/owner cosmetic and textural scale, this means holding her back from showing until the hair grows back in correctly. She is supposed to be my first show dog and now I have to hold her back and hope she isn't traumatized by the experience. As of right now she won't let me near her with my regular brush either and as said before, she used to really enjoy being brushed.
