Perfect waffles
By Donald R. Miller on Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2013
First off, this is NOT a Belgian waffle maker. The waffles are thinner than a true Belgian waffle, which is what I wanted, because they're much crisper. I really tried to find something to complain about with the Chef's Choice 852 but I can't. It is simplicity itself. About 2/3 cup of waffle mix on each side, close the cover, wait a couple minutes till the steam has stopped, enjoy some perfect waffles. There's a guidebook with the waffle maker that has some decent recipes, but the regular waffles are somewhat bland. There are better recipes online, but don't be afraid to experiment. I didn't believe these waffle makers could be completely non-stick, but they really are. Be careful you don't scratch the coating when removing the waffles. Cleanup amounts to a quick wipedown of the grids and exterior. I did get the mixture on the chromed exterior and it didn't stick to that either. Yes there's some overflow, so put the machine on something you can wipe clean or throw away. No on/off switch to become defective; when you plug it in it's on. Just a rotary dial on top to select the temperature range from one through six--I do most of my waffles on five so they come out really crisp and dark, but this is dependant on the waffle mixture. If they're not quite done enough, close the lid and wait another minute. I haven't had any problem with the waffles separating top and bottom. The metal surface gets pretty hot but the plastic parts are cool enough to touch by hand even after its been on for a while. I put some oil on the plates and turned it on high the first time I plugged it in, then ran a batch of waffles that I threw away. This is all the "seasoning" I've ever done, and still nothing sticks. Let the plates heat up before you pour the batter. Only takes a few seconds between batches cause it heats quickly. There's no beeper to tell you the waffles are done, but in my experience they're not very accurate anyway. If the steam has stopped, they're done. Makes waffles fast enough to feed 2-4 people. If you're feeding more Chef's Choice makes a four-place waffle maker as well, which I have no experience with, but I'm pretty impressed with the quality of this product. Latch holds the lid in place for upright storage. Short cord, as it should be. Like I said, I can't really find fault with this little appliance. Definitely a five star!

Average product with few flaws
By silverorchid on Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2013
I have had several waffle makers. Since most of the waffle makers are making Belgium waffle, I decided to purchase this because I enjoy classic waffle. Also, this was one of the 4 waffle makers recommended on Good House Keeping so I decided to give it a try. Overall, I was not impressed with the item after trying it out a few times. It's not a bad waffle maker, but few design flaws really made me return this. Pro: * The nonstick plate is good quality and very easy to clean. * The waffle is thin as it claims. *Taste - the waffle tastes decent. Not great but not bad, either. Con: * The lock - you need to unlock the maker in order to open it. It's good for storage so it doesn't open, but it could be dangerous to use after the waffle is done. I burned my hand a few times trying to open it. Most waffle maker has a plastic handle that extends out so it's safe to open after the waffle is done. * The temperature - The body of the machine gets really hot after the waffle is done and takes a long time to cool down. It's relatively hot compare to other waffle maker *The size - the item is not compact at all. It's on the larger side and a bit bulky. It's also heavy to carry out of storage. *The look - the machine looks a lot better in photo than in person. Overall, it's an very average waffle maker which is not easy to use. Since there are many waffle makers in this price range and are safer to use, I feel it's best to try something else.
