Great little rice cooker!!!
By Mike on Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2012
I'm loving this tiny little rice cooker! I used to have a microwave cooker and it was pretty inconsistant when it cooked the rice; most of the time it would be undercooked and it always made a huge mess in the microwave. So I decided to try out this cheap, highly rated rice cooker and I'm so glad that I did. I usually only cook for two people, so I make about .5-1 cup of rice (uncooked). There is plenty of room to cook another cup or two, making this cooker ideal for feeding 1-4 people. It's small, so it takes up very little space on my counter, and the small size also makes it easier to clean. It takes about 15 minutes to make the perfect rice. I took the advice of other reviewers and used a bit more water than the instructions called for. This is definitely the way to go. The recommended water is not quite enough, but it is easy to figure out the correct amount (only took me two times to get it right, and even when it wasn't right, the rice was still decent). I also took the advice from people saying to turn it off when it is done cooking. I have not tried leaving it on yet, so I'm not sure if that would ruin the rice or not. Now my favorite part.... the steamer!!!! I love steamed vegatables, and now I can steam them at the same time that my rice cooks!! I was skeptical at first.... but I tried some carrots and broccoli in there the first time I used it, and they were steamed to perfection! What a great idea! It's less work, less dishes to clean, and it steams it perfectly. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a cheap but fantastic little rice cooker. Great for singles or small families. Cooking the rice is very quick and easy with minimal work, and cleaning the cooker is quite easy as well (no burnt stuff on the sides that would require scrubbing or soaking). And let's face it.... the price is hard to beat! UPDATE: I've been using this cooker for about a year now. I have seen no decrease in performance since I bought it. I use it about twice a week, and it is one of my favorite kitchen appliances. To elaborate on the first review I left.... yes, leaving it on the "warm" setting after the rice has finished cooking will dry it out a bit. Just unplug it once it has finished cooking, or just eat it right away. If you insist on keeping it on the "warm" setting, add 2-3 more oz of water at the start. I have also tried many veggies in the steamer, and they all turn out great! Carrots, beans, broccoli, peppers, peas, corn, cauliflour, the list goes on. And all of them turn out so well. I will use this thing until it breaks!

Works okay enough, but wouldn't recommend
By Debra K. on Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2024
It does cook rice, but I would say it's better to just get something else if you're looking for anything more than a glorified self-heating pot. There's no way to control the temperature or predict the cook time; the cook function just seems to turn off if there's not enough weight and the temperature is low enough. You can hold down the cooking button, but it's not ideal if you're thinking about using this as a substitute for a stove (ie, dorm cooking like me). I also wouldn't recommend cooking rice without the steamer on top regardless of whether you steam anything, since it seems prone to boiling over. I've tried pretty much everything to stop it from boiling over, from thoroughly rinsing the rice, to changing the amount of rice cooked at once, to the water ratio, to adding oil, watching the pot lid... nothing's worked. So, to save myself the trouble of having to wipe down every nearby surface every time, it's more worth it to me to just wash the steamer. Finally, I'm not sure if this was a fault of the material or myself, but the bowl has started to develop small scratches on the bottom inside. I'm cautious about scratching it now, but just in case, make sure to treat the bowl with care and dry off the bottom after washing. The heating element can be damaged by the water being directly on it.

It does the job just as advertised. I thought a rice cooker the silliest appliance ever but after years of dry or too wet rice I thought I’d give it a try. It works. It really works. I’m amazed and so glad I chose to buy this product. It’s just right for two people. Love the steamer on top. Also it’s so simple. I have to say there r things I can still learn. This little rice cooker is the bomb

Now that I've had this for a while, just want to write a little review on it. My old rice cooker broke (not from this brand and it was a 3 cup) and I searched around for a new one. I decided on this one due to the little steamer attachment on top. Now, I'll admit I've not actually had a use yet for it, as I usually just throw veggies in with meat that I'm cooking on the stove, such as when I make stir fry and things like that. I'm paranoid about meat/poultry not being cooked all the way, so I'll probably not use the steamer top for meat, but eventually I'll get around to that for veggies. The rice cooking part is fantastic. I've had to adjust the water a bit after a few uses, so while I'm glad for the little guidelines in the book, I feel that one full plastic cup of rice needs the next line up from the 1 line in the cup. After that, the rice came out perfect, before it was a little dry, and I'm not sure if that is due to having too much rice, or not lining it up right. But either way, with adjustments, it's fine. The product is a nice red colour, and doesn't feel cheap at all. It's a snap to clean, I always wait for it to cool off before washing it down. As a pro tip, NEVER put the wet bowl back into the base, ALWAYS let it dry completely before putting it back together. Water can collect in the base and break the appliance, or burn on the little hot plate. Ventilation is very good on this product, just point it away from your cabinets to prevent wood warping of course. The cable I feel could be a touch longer, I have oddly placed plugs in my kitchen, and one socket I can't even use due to the placement of the refrigerator (I'm in an apartment), so I share two plugs between a microwave, toaster, mixer and now this, so I'm constantly unplugging and plugging things in again. A very minor nitpick, but I feel like I should mention it for people who have awkward plug placements. All in all, a very nice product that I don't regret getting. As of January 2016, this cooker is still going strong with no signs of major wear. If it ever does break down, I will be getting this kind again! As of January 2020, the cooker is still working!
Cook rice great! Makes a mess.

I have only cooked white rice in this a few times so far and it cooks the rice perfectly. I got this on sale for only $18, so for the price and the cooking quality, I gave it 4 stars. The reason it's not 5 stars it makes a huge mess! I have to put a big plate under it because it boils over and spills out gunky rice water everywhere! But it's easy to clean up and still have great rice!

My only regret is that I didn't know of this product sooner. Pros: It's difficult to eat healthy while making time for work, leisure and rest. Eating out a few nights a week gets expensive very fast. This little, red angel will put those worries behind. I was hesitant on purchasing this product. As the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for." This rice cooker will possibly save you hundreds of dollars through out the year with quick, healthy, inexpensive dinners you can make. If you're single, this is the answer to all of your cooking woes. Size - The cooker has a small footprint that you can set on any counter top, or table. You can leave it there without worry of taking up too much space, or burning what's underneath. For it's size it can make an amazingly large amount of food for one person. Cooking - The food is cooked quickly with little effort. Due to only water being used, the lean meats and vegetables are cooked with no worries of needing to add oils or cooking grease. With the cup the cooker comes with, one cup of brown rice serves me two meals. My meals consist of rice mixed in with vegetables such as squash to give it flavor, and 3-4 chicken thighs that I place on the cooking pan. I prefer to mix in the rice with the vegetables so I can have more space to cook more meat. The meat is steam cooked, so it's healthy and when you mix it in with the rice and squash it gives it a bit of flavor without needing spices. Both the rice and meat are cooked simultaneously with no issues. Everything is done in over an hour, and I stir it once or twice. Hardware and maintenance - The steamer itself is sturdy, and cools down quickly. With one button to push makes it feel like I'm cheating when it's cooking. No food or water should spill on it, so keeping it clean is an after thought. Cleaning the cooking pot, pan, lid and spoon takes about five minutes with soap and water. No need to put it in a dish washer since it's almost trivial to clean. Again, because I don't use oils to cook it's incredibly simple to maintain. The build quality is sturdy and thick. Cons: The only two cons I've found are so trivial that they're barely worth mentioning due to the price and performance this little beast puts out. The aluminum pan that cooks the meat has flimsy handles (this is a common problem with a lot of cook ware). You can feel the screws used were too short and will sooner or later break from the pan. Nothing that two screws and a small handle from an old pot won't fix. The power cord is quite short (about a foot long) and you will need an outlet that's nearby if you prefer a clean station without extension cords. Again, for the price and performance these two cons are barely worth mentioning and I think the product deserves the 5 stars. Note: The aluminum pan is very thin. Be careful if you use any acid based flavoring such as lemon juice. It will eat through the pan, but it's acidic, so you can't put blame on the pan. Summary: I'm extremely happy with this product, and the fact that it's under $20 makes it feel like I made out like a bandit. Easy to make, healthy food for single workaholics and college kids. Enjoy!

I love this appliance. It’s so useful and easy to work with. I like it so much I named it Rizo! I can add one cup of white or brown rice and 1.5 cups of water and add veggies to the steamer and turn Rizo on. And I’m always sure that I’ll end up with a warm delicious cooked rice. Also, I can add one cup of penne pasta and add salt and pasta sauce and add water until the pasta is covered by water, and turn Rizo on. It has made my life so easy and is worth 100x times its cost!

This replaces an Oster that I used for years. (Sadly, it belonged to my daughter, who reclaimed it.) This is very similar to the Oster, but seems a little less durable. Yes it spits, but so did the Oster on occasion. I'm not a rice-connoisseur, so I'm not as fussy as some people. Yes, the rice can stick to the bottom of the pot, but it's edible and the pan cleans up easily. I frequently use the steamer to cook my veggies while the rice is cooking, and that works out well.
