Works with smart plugs (and timers), and it's toasty!
By Sashy on Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2025
I needed a heated mattress pad that would warm itself up before bedtime, because I always forget to do it myself. First I’d tried the Sunbeam WiFi heated mattress pad, but it just didn't get very warm, and it was a pain to use (to get more than halfway hot, you have to use the physical controls - the app won't do it). So I started looking for something that would work with a smart plug, since I already had a few others already. But most heated mattress pads don’t work with smart plugs, because when you plug them in, they stay off until you turn them on. At first I figured I could find a pad with an old-style analog control, but I only found a single brand on Amazon (Biddeford) and queen size wasn’t available. Instead I ordered it directly from the manufacturer - but I never received it. A little more research led me to this Beautyrest which specifically says it works with smart plugs and timers. Setting it up with the smart plug (or a timer switch) was really easy, instructions come with it the pad... after you get the smart plug working, turn the smart plug on, plug the mattress pad into the smart plug, and make sure the mattress pad controller is off. Then hold down the preheat button on the controller until the preheat LED blinks once. Then press the power button on the controller to turn the pad on. That's it - from now on you can just turn the smart plug on and off to turn the pad on and off, and the pad will stick to whatever heat setting it was last set to. (According to another commenter, you should set the smart plug or timer to turn off the pad before its auto shutoff time of 10 hours, otherwise the smart plug feature may disable. That's fine with me since I want the pad to turn off a couple of hours after I fall asleep.) Beyond the convenience of having a warm bed every night, the pad heats up quickly and gets nice and warm - much more than my wimpy sunbeam pad did! And it feels comfortable; the wires aren't very noticeable, and the plug connectors are close to the far end of the bed, so my feet don't reach them. P.S. I have both controllers plugged into a single smart plug, but if you want different heat durations on different sides of the pad, or different start times, you could use two smart plugs. The pad label says it uses 150 watts; my smart plug showed 119 watts with both sides on max heat.
