Pets would barely drink water before we got this
By Honest Reviews on Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2013
My cat and my dog would both tip over their water bowl instead of drinking from it unless the water came straight from the fridge or sink. Since using this (for almost a year now), both animals love it and drink from it all the time. In fact they will look at me somewhat annoyedly when I take it away to clean it or if it runs out of water. Pros: Super super convenient (no more filling up a water bowl multiple times a day and cleaning up spilled water that was rejected). Animals love it and drink lots of water (better for them). Holds a LOT. I have a full grown husky and a cat, and this lasts about a week when full. Pretty quiet Cons: This does take a bit of work to clean properly. You have to take it apart and preferably get it into a sink (although I'm sure you could use a hose outside), spray and/or scrub it out, clean the sponge filter (large debree/hair/etc.) and replace the carbon filter. I do this about once a month or if I'm being lazy every other month. It's really not bad overall, just take some time and can be messy. Tips: If you rub the carbon filter gently with your hand under running water, most of the dirt will come out and it'll last much longer. If you pull it out and it looks dirty, try this before throwing it away. If you try to clean it and it still looks pretty rough, then it's time to replace it. UPDATE: Still loving this water fountain and still running strong after more than 2 years of constant use. Probably should have thought of this sooner, but cleaning it in the bathtub is perfect, especially if you have a detachable nozzle shower head. I did not realize that you can actually take the motor apart and clean inside it (look up the manual on the petsafe/drinkwell website as a .pdf). In fact you void the warranty if you don't clean it regularly. Working like new again after doing so, go figure. Found this (although I think you can find it cheaper if you look around), and highly recommend: http://www.amazon.com/RADIO-SYSTEMS-CORP-PET-SAFE/dp/B008NSC1H6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426893410&sr=8-2&keywords=drinkwell+cleaning+brush+set

PLASTIC HOLDS ODOR, LOW FLOW, CONTINUOUS MAINTENANCE, NOT GOOD
By Robert E Eby on Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2015
You've been warned if you are reading this. I have had this fountain for almost one year now. I have 6 dogs all approximately 100 lbs. and they generally empty this fountain within 24 hours. Yep, refill the two holding tanks every day. Thats fine, no problem. The problem is this thing smells like the inside of your septic tank. Anyone that has had their tank pumped will know this smell. The plastic absorbs the smell, the filter around the pump motor really holds the odor bad. The charcoal filter does nothing to deter chemical odor from your tap water and allows the stale stink to develop fast. I have this inside my home next to the kitchen. The trickling water sounds nice and my pump has never made any excessive noise. I changed the charcoal filter every other week since new and take this fountain to the kitchen sink for a thorough cleaning inside as well. Slowly the stink starts to develop and gets a little stronger each month until it smells like something died in the kitchen !! Anyone that loves their pet enough to consider buying a fountain like this would not want their pet drinking from it after the first few months. The tanks stink, the base stinks and even the charcoal filter stinks!! Trust me. I'm still trying to find a good odor neutralizer for this thing. Something that the manufacturer should include in the box !!! There is no significant water flow so slobber and hair just sinks to the bottom of the basin. The water flow begins to slow up fast when you have multiple dogs using it. This is because maybe 20% of what goes into the water actually gets to the filter media around the pump. With my 6 dogs, about 3 to 4 days and the pump flow is down by 50%.
