Excellent, QUIET fan

To try and cope with outrageously high So Cal Edison electricity bills during the heat of summer, I purchased a Lasko box fan. The reviews called it a quiet fan that cooled well and I have to assume these people were not really picky about what they felt was "quiet." I ended up returning that one because it was far too loud even on the lowest setting, and especially for the proportion of noise to air it moved. I'm thinking, though, that these are just inherent qualities of box fans.I then purchased the Rowenta pedestal fan based on numerous reviews citing how quiet it was, and just kept my fingers crossed that "quiet" actually meant "quiet."It did. This fan is QUIET (I guess I should have typed it in small letters to connote quietness). And it cools very well, even on the lowest setting. Even the first three settings are quieter than the box fan and the forth, turbo mode, is about as loud as the box fan on its lowest mode except the Rowenta moves way more air.The fan came very well packed to protect it from damage. All of the individual parts were nicely wrapped. The instructions were inside of the blade covers. I thought assembly was very easy. It took me less than ten minutes, taking my time. I know some reviewers complained about the instructions but for me the pictorial diagrams were clear and self-explanatory. Everything fit together and the build quality of this fan is excellent. Someone remarked that it is Chinese manufacturing but German pricing. If that was meant to be a slur on Chinese manufacturing, they don't know what they are talking about. The quality of this fan is good and while it is relatively high priced, I would say you get what you pay for. That box fan was $25 and this fan cost more than 3x as much with Amazon deal of the day pricing but it is well worth it.The fan is quiet, as I mentioned above, air flow is good on all levels and the controls/remote work like they are supposed to. The base is heavy which makes the fan cumbersome to move around, but it also makes for a solid foundation so it doesn't tip over or move easily. I don't think they intended for this fan to be moved all over the place. It also looks good - the finish is nice and so is the color.I'm very happy with this purchase.

Failing after barely 1 year of usage!

Update: Rowenta repairs my fan.I got an email from Rowenta stating my fan is still under warranty. They issued a postage paid shipping label. They wanted me to ship the entire fan. I decided to only ship the top portion. (fan, motor, housing, etc). I cost me about $35 for the packaging alone. I used UPS and they destroyed my fan.Scratches, cracked housing bent fins, ect. etc. The service center went ahead and replaced the housing and repaired the oscillating motor. I then received a call to pick up the fan from the center because they don't want to ship it back.I drove about 1hr to get there and pick up the fan. Everything works fine BUT there are scratches all over the fan now. It looks like a used unit. Not sure if they replaced or repaired the fan. The serial number is gone so I don't know. All I know is the fan still works and is still quiet. So I'm happy with that. Not happy that I had to go through all this for a fan I bought for $100.-----------------------Update: Purchased on June 29, 2013.Today, May 11, 2014 the fan is no longer oscillating. Can't believe it's already broken for a fan at this price range. I had fans barely 25% of the cost of this last longer.I have contacted Rowenta to see if they will fix it. I will update this review when I receive a reply.-----------------------I was surprise to see how heavy this thing is. The base it metal unlike all of the previous fans we had purchased. The installation was a breeze. I manage to put it all together in about 10 minutes w/o reading the instructions. The first thing I noticed was the bright blue led. This fan is for our bedroom so it's way too bright. I will put some small decals over the led. First tuned it on and yes, on the lowest settings, the fan is fairly quiet. Great for the bedroom, and perfect to leave on at night. I have tried many fans and returned most of them. The only one I have kept are the window mounted fans that has two fans which allows you to bring in fresh air and take out room air. These however, lack any air flow. They are loud for the amount of air it pushes. The only major flaw for such an expensiveness fan is that there is no timer! Unless I am missing something or not reading the instruction right, I do not see an option to set a timer.Adjusting the tilt of the fan is a breeze. All you do is just tilt it to the angle you wish it to be. Unlike my previous fans where you have to turn a knob to adjust the angle. Which was useless as the fan would point down no matter how tight you turned the knob. This fan just clicks into place. It's a bit overpriced for what we get, but the build quality seems very good. The only thing plastics are the blades, the motor cover, the control panels and a few knobs. This thing is heavy BTW. So moving it up and down the stairs could be a bit of work for some. At the lowest setting, it's is great for sleep mode. You can hear some noise at the higher settings but it's mostly air noise and not the fan or mechanical sound. The remote is a bit bulky for something that only has 3 buttons. We're talking "approximately" 6 x 2 x .5".Compared to another fan I purchased at WalMart, it sounded like a Jet Engine at the lowest settings. One last thing, the design looks a little different than your typical pedestal fans. Almost sleek looking. I like it.
