Attractively Well-Designed and Sturdy With Many Different Versatile Capabilities
By Careful 'n Selective on Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2016
Most homes have a very limited area for our storage, with poorly designed closets that have one or two rods for clothing. Then there is an upper shelf for everything else, which is usually too high for me to reach. I don’t think that anyone has enough closet space, which results in a massive clutter and with stuff piled up on the floor in the corners of a closet. In addition, this is worse for a woman, because we have at least 3 times the amount of stuff due to all our accessories. Personally, I am so tired of running to different closets of our home, just to gather all my things, and I really need to have it all in one area, which would save a large amount of my time. I spent months looking for closet organizers and more than just a shoe rack or two. Although the fabric hanging shelves helped to consolidate my personal belongings, they used up the room on my closet rods, which limited my space even more. I chose the Whitmor closet organizer because it looked well designed and offered more hanging space, shelves, drawers and with a dozen shoe compartments in an all-in-unit. First, assembling the Whitmor closet organizer is quick and straightforward, and we did not even need a rubber mallet to fit the pieces together. It took my son under ½ an hour to set this unit up, and he rarely needed to consult the included directions. Each section is lightweight enough that I can move it easily, and I am not strong, as I weigh well under 100 lbs. and to complicate matters I am a short person, just under 5’ 2”. There is no doubt that this is a ‘deluxe’ organizer, and it is so much better than I even dreamed or hoped it would be, due to the all versatile abilities. This allows me to ‘custom’ tailor my storage needs according to my personal requirements. The 2 rods for hanging clothes can hang at different heights, from the very top or along any of the lower 4 ‘shelving’ units. Clearly, the most space is if the first rod hangs on the top and the bottom rod hung halfway down. In addition, these rods are ‘expandable’ they slide out from 24” up to 43”, which enables versatility for a limited amount of space. The shelving units are all the same size, approximately 14” across (length) and 17” from against the wall to the front (width). Therefore, the 3 drawers will fit in any of the 9 sections, or if I choose, I can buy extra drawers for any of the 6 empty shelves that I have left over and they will all fit in the same way. Since the shelves are not a flat surface, (the surface is composed of metal bars) I needed to ‘tug’ at the drawers to pull them out. However, by resting a thin piece of acrylic or a laminated piece of tile over the bars will provide a smoother surface, and helps the drawers to slide out a little easier. Otherwise, after filling, the drawers are a little heavier and need some slight lifting in order to slide them out. The 3 fabric drawers are lightweight but also sturdy, and they are spaciously roomy. Their approximate measurements are 13” length (across), 16” width and 11” depth. I LOVE the 12-shoe compartment organizer, because each compartment holds 2 pairs of my stiletto high heels, therefore I can fit 24 PAIRS of shoes in this section. As a reference my shoe size 6.5. Each of the 12 single compartments are 6” in length (one shoe next to the other) 6” height (tall enough to fit my high heels) and the depth from front to back is 15”. Therefore, I can fit one pair in back and another pair in front, for each of these 12 compartments, thereby accommodating 24 pair of shoes! Since the unit sections are interchangeable, the ‘shoe pocket portion’ will fit on either the left or right side, with the drawers and shelves on the other. In the course of getting my closet organized, I have changed and rearranged this closet organizer a few different times and everyone will use it for different needs. Currently during the winter season, I have all my heavy fur-type vests and sweaters hanging from the top, (62 items and most of them are bulky and heavyweight for winter). Since I wear my high boots more often than shoes, I have hung 22 pairs of boots on some clip-on hangers (for slacks), and I have them hanging from the bottom rod, (with more room to spare). In addition, I have utilized the sides of this unit, my scarf hanger rack, containing 20 long scarves hanging off the left side, and my belt hanger hanging from the right. I love this closet organizer. Previously I had my extra winter accessories spread around in different closets, and now I have them altogether. Furthermore, although my closet has a little less room to move around, I no longer have the clutter piled in corners, and I am no longer tripping over my handbags, boots, and my extra pairs of shoes that used to be on the floor. In addition, and consequently, the top shelf in my closet that I cannot reach without a stepladder is now a real storage area for items such as the room fan that I use in the summer, along with my lightweight summer hats, and warm weather handbags. The Whitmor closet organizer is an attractive and well-designed ‘double deluxe’ closet addition. I love its versatility that I can ‘custom-tailor’ to my needs. This has exceeded all my expectations and surpassed all my personal requirements.

not bad for the money

I'll start off with a disclaimer about my expectations for this product. After having read several dozen reviews stating this product was absolutely sturdy, easy to put together, and pretty good all around I was delighted to have finally found such a product. I ended up being slightly dissapointed. My biggest complaint is the "instruction" manual for assembly. I'm a fairly handy person having remodeled an entire house and also pretty good with electronics from building computers and repairing various peices of equipment. I hardly ever read instruction manuals, rather I reference them for key peices of information regarding w/e product I happen to be working with. The only real peice of information I could need from this set of instructions was the directionality of the connecting center supports. And from what I could tell the instructions depicted parts which did not exist in my assorted collection of rods, plastic, and shelves. In the end it probably doesn't matter as the unit went together regardless. It was a minor annoyance, but poor instructions(especially ones that describe or appear to depict peices which are clearly different) are probably my biggest complaint across the DIY furniture segment in general. So after about 15 minutes of tapping rod into holes with a rubber mallet(small block of wood and hammer would work well too) I had assembled this gangly looking metal and plastic rack. Given a level surface I can imagine the unit would be pretty sturdy as a whole. I would still recommend fastening it to your wall in some way to prevent an unbalanced load from tipping it over, as is possible with any free standing shelving unit (this has nothing to do with the unit like other reviews might lead you to believe, rather it is simple physics). The shelving is welded to the structural tubing and I fear it will give way with excess weight or force (as I have seen happen at my place of employment where we have 1 shelf with a similar configuration). Milling a small hole into the tube, inserting the rod and then welding would have created a much stronger bond that would be less likely to break over time. The center rods that form the larger shelves have a considerable amount of give to them and bowed very easily when pressure was applied. The connectors for the top and bottom center shelving sections came apart twice during assembly of the unit. It didn't seem to matter how hard I forced the 2 shelves into each other they would not stay together. This could be a problem with the plastic connector or and simply a poor design. I would have liked to see a screw of some sort to accomplish the job of connecting 1 metal peice to another metal peice on a horizontal plane. I will probably do just that myself if I find the unit continually splits in 2. Overall I am pleased with the look and feel of the unit. Assembly was easy (15 minutes, really?!) and required absolutely no tools, though I'm not sure that is an advantage since it means no screws or locking mechanisms in this case. For the money I don't think you'll find a better organization unit and with only a few slight modifications this shelving unit would be absolutely superb.

This closet organizer is very sturdy and was super easy to assemble. It holds a lot without wobbling, and the double rod design gives plenty of hanging space. Great for extra storage and keeping things organized. Definitely a solid purchase!

For $40 with free shipping, this is one of the best-value purchases I've made on Amazon. This open closet is exactly what I was looking for--a cheap, decent-looking, and somewhat durable storage solution. I'm really happy with the purchase but cannot give this 5-star because of the following cons after owning it for 6 months. PROS: 1. Low price and free shipping. 2. Decent looking storage solution. 3. It does its job well, providing you more storage room. CONS: 1. The rods are made of mostly aluminum (not steel as advertised) and the connectors plastic, which is why the closet is lightweight and cheap. So, don't expect it to hold lots of heavy jackets or anything heavy-duty. I use it to store sweaters, button downs, and a few light jackets. I store the heavier stuff on the lower bar and lower shelves. Even then, after 6 months of use, the closet starts to lean forward about 15 degrees. (I assembled it carefully, so I don't believe it's due to my handyman skill.) I utilize both hanging bars and all the shelves. So, if you don't maximize the closet's utility, you may not have the leaning problem like I do. 2. Assembling is not easy and takes longer if you do it yourself. The package claims "easy to assemble," they underestimate the actual required effort of an average DIY person. 3. The included instruction is not that helpful. It has pictures but low on texts. It doesn't tell you specifically which part should be put in which direction. 4. You won't get a 100% straight standing closet like Amazon's pictures. Due to minor manufacturer's defects like some rods are about 1/8 of an inch shorter than their sisters or some connectors' sockets are a bit wider than the rod's diameter, you'll end up having a shelf or a bar slightly angled/crooked. This problem is common in cheap furnitures. ASSEMBLING: You need a hammer, a pair of scissors or cutting pliers, and preferably a partner who will help holding the other side of closet as you assemble it. Pay attention to the fact that the rods' ends have different diameters--one bigger than the other so that you can connect them. Think a step ahead of your actual progress. You don't want have the whole closet put together only to realize you forgot to install the 2nd hanging bar or installed a connector in the wrong direction.

First of all, the 5 stars is for the product itself. It is very sturdy, and with a quick look at the directions, it took like 20 minutes to put it together. Overall, I absolutely love this product, and as far as first impressions go, it looks and feels like it is going to hold up for a very long time. It is absolutely worth every penny. I would recommend this product to friends and family and I plan to purchase 2 more of them. BUT! THE DIMENSIONS (from the manufacturer AND from previous amazon reviewers are INCORRECT), which is SOOOO frustrating. The manufacturer says that this product is 45 1/4" wide. That is a very important measurement! I measured my closet, it measures 46", so I figured, "no big deal, it'll just be close". NOT!!! This product is 45 3/4" wide, both I and my husband measured separately to be sure. I barely got this thing to fit. BARELY. ALSO! The dimensions another reviewer gave for the 4 small shelves are incorrect as well. Here are the INSIDE measurements of the shelf -- the amount of space that you actually have to fit a storage bin in -- it is 13 1/2" wide (13 3/4" at most but that's cutting it really close), 15 5/8" high, and 17 3/4" deep. Now of course, the entire shelving unit measures 19 3/8" wide, so technically you could argue that it is 19 3/8" deep -- but then your storage bin would be hanging off the edges of the shelf. The bins I bought (on Amazon) were the Whitmor JAVA Collapsible Cubes. According to the manufacturer, the bins are 14x14x14 (also incorrect). The correct measurements are 13 5/8" x 13 5/8" x 13 5/8". These cubes fit in the shelves, but it was a very close shave. They still move freely and easily on and off of the shelves, but they really just barely fit, literally. ANYWHO! Overall, I love the product, and absolutely HATE all of these people's imprecise measurements. Whitmor really needs to correct the dimensions, especially because this is such a popular product. CORRECT PRODUCT DIMENSIONS: Overall dimensions 45 3/4" wide 68 1/8" high 19 3/8" deep Shelf Dimensions 13 1/2" wide 15 5/8" high 17 3/4" deep

I was about to order a much more expensive free standing shelf unit when I came upon this shelf tower. I thought the low price would mean cheap product but I ordered because size was perfect fit for my closet, It took less than 15 minutes to assemble and it is marvelous. Plenty strong for use with clothes or home sundries. I would not advise this unit for tools but I estimate each shelf can handle 20 lbs with ease, I very highly recommend.

This is an update to my review below. I bought a second rack because I like the first one so well and it is working great! I added more photos to show how to put together. This time, I was able to put together by myself and without additional tools (unless it bothers your hands to hit hard against the plastic, then I would recommend a rubber mallet). Overall this rack amazed me. I bought it as a temporary solution while transitioning and it is still holding strong. I did not think it would hold so well but I am going to buy another. When putting it together, I would highly suggest having a second person and a rubber mallet to help you connect the poles and the plastic pieces together (unless you have very strong hands and do not might hitting them hard against the plastic). A couple of my black pieces had slightly broken edges but due to the timing, I decided not to send the items back for replacement. I am glad that I did not because it truly did not make a difference and I do see them as well (I do recommend sending back or requesting new pieces if they effect the stability). I currently have women's dress/work shirts on the top hanging rack, multiple pairs of slacks on the lower hanging rack, towels and random items on the shelves to the side and a few light-weight items across the top. I do think the hanging racks would hold jeans but because of the weight and not wanting to risk it, I folded mine and placed them on the bottom rack. I have not moved the rack since I put it together and I cannot speak to how it does when being moved but I am sure that if you take your items off the rack, move it to it's new location and then add the items back, everything will be fine! Again, I would highly recommend and hope that you enjoy yours as well.

I needed a double-rail shirt hanger for my new smaller apartment, and settled on this (mostly because of the price). I wish I had saved the money and put it toward what I have now. I'm not saying it's not for anyone, but it isn't for me. First, I wanted something that would last, and this doesn't give that impression. Second, I'm tall (Men's L or XL), and that means that shirts hang about 38" from the rail. There's considerably less with this unit-- 32" from the upper to the lower rail, or the bottom shelf. Womens' or childrens' shirts may be able to hang without crumpling up at their tails. (This is for dress shirts and flannel shirts. Sweatshirts and sweaters just barely fit, with some of the longer ones bumping the floor.) I wouldn't really recommend it for the kids, though, or for constant use: The force-fit method of connection means that there's considerable sway, even when just sliding clothes on hangers from one side of the rail to the other. I temporarily solved this by putting a blanket on the top and letting it drape off the sides-- it still swayed with use but at least didn't bump into the wall each time. Assembly was easy, though I'd suggest a rubber mallet to (gently) seat the poles into the shelf supports. The only issue I ran into was the instructions, which note that certain "stickered sides" should go one way or the other; look carefully for a tiny round sticker, the same color as the plastic, on a few of the support pieces. Disassembly was easy too (especially with that same rubber mallet), and the unit is easy to carry whether assembled or not; so this would make a good emergency clothes storage unit. It's the same general idea as an inflatable bed. There's not much room between the top shelf and the top clothes rail. I use plastic hangers and had to twist them considerably to get them to fit under the shelf (and not hang up on the wire frame). Lifting a shirt off was also more trouble than it should have been. The bottom rail doesn't have this problem. I can't vouch for the long-term reliability of this product, but remember that it's metal poles friction-fit into plastic sockets. I would be surprised if it survived two years of modest use, based on experiences with similar systems. It might last longer if you used it for storage of seldom-used garments, something you wouldn't need to access every day. The "silver" is actually grey, which worked for me; it's not a bright chrome but a sort of industrial color. It's neutral enough to go with anything. I can't say it looks great, but if you're shopping for a cheap clothes rail, you probably aren't getting into House Beautiful magazine. (Time out for a short rant: Why are different colored products sold at different prices? I would have preferred the black paint job, but that was six dollars more. What, black paint is rarer than grey?) What I wound up getting was the ALGOT frame system from Ikea. Four units give you slightly more rail space than the Whitmor product, though no little wire shelves on the side. I got six, one of which had basket-drawer rails, and still found it a bargain at $129. If you can handle building the Whitmor, you can handle building the ALGOT. These screw together firmly and are much heavier-duty, though still have some sway to them when moving clothes (not enough so that I needed the blanket as padding). Four ALGOT clothes rail frames plus two top shelves will run you half again as much as the Whitmor unit, but will let you store taller mens' shirts and not worry that the whole thing will collapse. Now all I have to do is sell this slightly used wire-frame shelf unit. Any takers?
