What is this science/witchcraft? No more earplugs!
By Suburbanbushbabe on Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025
One minute I hear it and wonder how I'm going to fall asleep with this hiss. And then the other minute, I've dropped like a rock and it's the next morning. I read until I'm sleepy or sometimes until I'm asleep and then I have to wake up because I'm sitting up in bed. So I compose myself for sleep and lie down again. But getting back to sleep often is not easy. And I wake up again, not because I have to go to the bathroom. I just wake up because. I'm still falling asleep as I read but after I compose myself for sleep, I stay asleep. No more waking up again in the middle of the night and then going back to sleep. I live in a condo complex with the cars parked right up to the curbs by the windows and private roads running through it. A few trees but nothing that really dampens the noise of traffic and parking and car alarms going off in the middle of the night. Inside my condo, noise leaks from above and somewhat below, but mostly from above. It's not my neighbors' fault. We're all pretty considerate about noise leakage, but you can't get rid of footsteps and other sounds of living that leak through the ceilings. I've worn ear plugs every night for years. Then I read about this thing and bought it and it came overnight. I wondered how something with these sounds that were rather intrusive could solve this problem. But I found a sound that was the least objectionable and turned it on. I could still hear my upstairs neighbors but much less. I could still hear the floor and their footsteps but not as much. I couldn't really hear their voices as much either. Anyway, next thing you know it's morning. I notice as I wake up that I can't hear the machine sound. But then I become fully awake and I can hear it again. So I turn it off. A remote would be nice for that, but can't have everything. It's been two nights and my sleep hasn't been disturbed by ANYTHING. I've slept right through the night, have fallen asleep incredibly fast - and earlier - and haven't woken up mid sleep. It can take me awhile to fall asleep because I'll hear every sound, creaking, the outside hall door, skittering in the walls, whatever. And it makes me anxious. But for some reason, and somehow, this little hissing machine gets rid of all that. And I have slept soundly and uninterrupted. No more earplugs!

Disappointed for now, but will give it some more time

This is my very initial review, after using the machine for like 30-40 minutes after opening the package. Before this I had a Dohm, which I decided to return because it wouldn't get loud enough while retaining a lower pitch, but instead, a higher pitched wind sound would come out at max setting. So i decided to give Lectrofan a try after a gazillion of positive reviews. I will update this review after a couple of days and trying it at night at different settings but as an initial take on it: I can feel it's mechanical... yes the sound is almost natural, but at certain Fan settings I could hear a weird higher pitched mechanical "ringing" here and there. When I got close to the device, it would disappear... So there is something about the user's proximity to the device. Ideally I'm looking for something that can imitate the HVAC fan. Because right now, turning on the HVAC fan is the only thing that drowns out the irritating loud TV sounds-bassy dialogue sounds from the neighbor's TV which is on our shared wall (apartments come with pre-fixed TV mounts on shared wall). On this device, there is only like 1 or 2 sounds that I can potentially use without irritation in an ideal world, but when I turn up the volume, a mechanical (higher pitched motor-like sound) accompanies the fan sound. Also when I go to another room, ideally I would like to hear the fan sound from there but, instead I hear a higher pitched sound until I come back to the room where the device is located...I also started getting the weird feeling in my ear canals with the device on for a while, the ones that you get on a plane because of the pressure, as if your ear canals are clogging up... maybe this device is not for me but I would like to give it a couple more attempts to see if I get used to it. Comparison with Dohm: If Dohm could get louder, I would definitely prefer Dohm. The problem with Dohm was 1) not loud enough (LF can get really loud) 2) not loud enough while maintaining a low pitch (again, LF can get loud if you want it to, but the louder, the higher chance for high-pitched motor/mechanical sound to appear) 3) vibrates the surface if it's like a wooden bookcase, or a desk, etc...so I had to keep it on the floor (LF doesn't cause any surface to vibrate and is compact) 4) annoying motor sound is heard from most angles, especially at higher sound setting/volume. (LF might have some weird mechanical motor sound on some fan settings, and at different levels of volume-maybe if you aren't too sensitive, you won't hear it, I don't know...) UPDATE 3 7 18** After a couple of unsuccessful attempts in the living room, and hearing weird undertone sounds from fan settings (which I don't know why is the case), I decided to use the 1st white noise setting and relatively low-mid volume in my bedroom. Surprisingly, the sound of the white noise option is closer to what I was looking for than the fan options...I set the timer to 3 hours, and don't know how, but apparently I fell asleep shortly after, then when I woke up in the middle of night (I generally do) the machine was off after 3 hours (which is great ! I don't have noise issues late into the night/morning so i prefer that my apartment is silent without any fan/white noise sound for coverage). So i'd say the first night was better than expected, so I'm raising the review to 3 stars for now.
