No more scratched knuckles!
By Moira Allen on Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2014
I bought this grater two or three years ago (afraid I don't remember just when) to grate chocolate. It works OK for that, but... it dawned on me that I might as well try it on (gasp) cheese! You know how it is with box graters and flat graters - you can never get the last bits grated, and in the process, you get grated knuckles as well. Once I tried this, I wondered, where have you been all my life? Now, I see a lot of reviews with negative comments on grating hard cheese, and I can't speak to that. I generally use it for cheddar and other soft cheeses. I can grate an entire bar of cheddar in about three minutes. Today I tried using it to grate some carrots. It didn't work so well - It would stop producing any "gratings" long before the carrots were "used up" and I had to constantly open the grater and reposition the carrots. But I didn't get far anyway, because.... today it died. Actually, what died was the unlocking tab on the drum. This is a small plastic tab that you press to unlock the drum from the grater to remove it. (It locks automatically when you open out the drum handle.) The plastic tab broke. The drum is probably still usable, if I'm willing to just push on a bit of wire to lock and unlock it, but I'm not... so that's why I'm here, to buy a new one. So... I'd say it has given me excellent service. On the other hand, if it's supposed to last for FIVE years, it definitely did not. Would I keep buying them anyway? Absolutely! I'll never go back to the "old way" of grating cheese again!

Performs pretty well, but handle is awkward and flimsy.
By Auros on Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2009
I got this grater for the large coars drum; having more space in the middle helps allow long shreds of softer cheeses to form and fall out without squishing into each other. I have to admit, this grater deals with stuff like cheddar or swiss cheese much better than any other rotary grater I've tried. However, most other graters, including the smaller Zyliss one, have the handle attached either as an integral piece of the barrel (flowing smoothly into the structure of the rim, all the way around), or at an attachment point in the CENTER of the barrel, using struts or a closed structure on one side of the barrel. This model has a hinged handle that attaches to one small arc of the rim. This makes for a somewhat awkward motion in use, and it's flimsy. After less than a year, the handle on my coarse drum shattered. I'm guessing the fine drum would've lasted less time than that (since you have to exert more force against the hard cheeses it's appropriate for) if I ever used it. I grate hard cheeses in a smaller Zyliss grater (Zyliss 11370 Classic Rotary Grater), which is sturdier and gives me better leverage. On the bright side, I found that the folks that own Zyliss offer excellent customer service -- I was able to get in touch with the company (google "DKB Household USA Corp Contact") and they offered to send me a free replacement drum. So, that was nice. But, if it breaks again, I will just buy something else.
