Dark without being burned, a coffee story.
By Calinthalus on Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2015
Let me start with some background. I live in rural Kentucky and have been on a search for good beans for a while. I have a burr grinder, french press combo that I've been using for going on 5 years now that have suited me well. Normally I get whole beans at the local grocery stores like Kroger or Walmart. These were not great, but were a far cry better than pre-ground coffees. Lately the supply has been drying up. The only whole beans I can find lately have been Starbucks brands. I like dark roast coffee but really don't like Starbucks. To my palate they seem burned. So, I went on a search for a decent replacement. I came across this coffee based on the reviews and the price point. I'm frugal enough that I don't like spending a fortune on non-essentials; but I'm willing to pay a bit more for an improvement. This coffee fits that bill perfectly. I was paying somewhere around $8 bucks for a 12oz. bag of beans when I could find them. These were decent enough beans, but not great. On reading of these Koffee Kult beans, I saw that if I went for the 5 pound bag the price point was at 0.62 per oz. Hell, I was paying 0.66 an oz for beans that I didn't love, so this was worth the price even at the 0.72 an oz the 2 pound bag was set at. I couldn't convince myself to go ahead and buy the 5 pound bag since if I didn't like them I'd be stuck drinking them anyway(again, frugal). So I settled for the 2 pound bag. I ordered on a Friday night and my beans were waiting on my porch when I got home from work on Monday. I had ran out of my old beans that morning so I was glad they came on time (fast). Thanks Amazon Prime for the free 2 day shipping on this purchase. I went ahead and cut open the bag and moved the beans to some airtight containers I keep in my cabinets away from the light. I took a good whiff and knew I'd like these beans. They weren't overly strong smelling, but with a good dark coffee smell and just a hint of spiciness. I put them up and looked forward to the morning. Tuesday morning I ground up some beans and prepared them in my Bodum French Press. I really enjoyed them. They make me want to get a larger coffee cup to carry to work every day because I finish the one I have long before I'm ready to be done with the coffee. I had a heart attack early this year so don't really want to press my luck on caffeine intake...but this coffee makes me want to. Don't worry, my cardiologist says I'm fine as long as I keep it below 4-5 cups a day since I don't drink soda. But my little 3 cup insulated cup might need an upgrade. Now, I'm not going to say this coffee is a revelation or the greatest thing since sliced bread (what's so great about sliced bread anyway?). What I will say is that it is much better than what I was buying at near about the same price point. It's a heady, dark, chocolaty drink with just a hint of spice. Dark without the bitterness of burned beans (I'm looking at you Starbucks). If you are grinding your own beans (which you should) then I would recommend you give these beans a shot. I don't know if I'll buy the 5 pound bag next time. I'm going to wait and see how the beans hold up over time in my cabinet before I make that call. What I do know is that I'll be ordering these again when I start to run out of what I have.

Great for Drip, Bad for espresso and Very old Roast Date
By Dcon on Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2015
This is my first go around with Koffee Kult and my response was luke warm. I love me a dark roast coffee and Koffee Kult did not disappoint in that department. The beans were nice and dark but a bit too oily for my liking, but nothing compared to some other offenders (I am looking at you starbucks). The actual flavor of the coffee is nice and strong and has a great aftertaste. I usually go with 3 tablespoons of coffee to 16oz of water. This coffee is excellent for drip. For espresso however it was great...for the first 5 days that is. Once day 6 hit, the beans must have went "stale" fast. This was noticeable on my quality of shots. During my first 5 days I was getting quality shots (35 second : 3 oz shots with a naked portafilter) but once day 6 came around for some reason I was getting really poor shots. I am talking my normal 3 ounces in 1:32 seconds. And this was consistent. I pulled 6 shots and they were all the same. This is not acceptable for espresso. Also let it be known that I received my beans on November 25th and my ROAST DATE was SEPTEMBER 25th. Overall the coffee is great and I actually took advantage of a lightning deal where I paid $16 for 2 pounds of coffee. I would recommend this for drip coffee or poor over but definitely look elsewhere if you want good espresso. The roast dates are just too far out to give you a quality shot for over an extended period of time. If Koffee Kult offered a 1lb or 2lb bag with a guaranteed roast date of shipment, I would give them my money and even subscribe. The coffee (even being 2 months past its roast date) was that good.
