Worth Every Penny for Novices and Experienced Canners Alike
By Olene Quinn on Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2025
I've been canning for several years and already owned just about every type of canner out there (water bath, steam, & pressure). I had this on my wishlist for several years wondering if it would be worth it for me. Well, it definitely *is* and I only wish I had gotten it sooner. The major pro here is the worry-free and (almost) hands off pressure canning. No more anxiously checking the stove and the gauge. No more setting and resetting and hoping you didn't your forget timers. For me, this outweighs the major con - the small capacity. (The Carey holds just about half as many jars as a standard stovetop pressure canner). Because it's so easy, I don't mind using it more often. I also think the small capacity will inspire me to can more of my small garden harvests this summer as I often end up freezing green beans and other veggies when I feel I don't have enough to make firing up the pressure canner worth it. The steam canning function also works well, but stovetop steam canning is so easy that it's not a huge selling point for me. I'm glad it's there and I have used it a few times, but I personally would not have purchased the Carey just for that. I have not tried the water bath function as I quit water-bathing a couple of years ago. I have not tried the slow cooker function as I already own a Crock-Pot. In summary, this electric canner is well priced. It is simple to use, heats up quickly, and is a valuable tool even for those who are already experienced and fully equipped home canners. I highly recommend it and if I had to start my canning journey over, this would be my first purchase.

Won't pressure can for me...unfortunately
By Dennis Christopher on Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2017
I really wanted this to work, but I can't seem to make that happen. I only bought it for high pressure canning of low acid foods...stocks, soups, etc. But, it won't work for me. I watched a few videos on you tube, I followed the instruction manual packed inside, I checked for updated manuals or instructions everywhere I could find any, and I called the company that now handles it. Here's my experience. The first time, I followed the manual...turned the 10 pound weight to "airtight" which is printed on a sticker on the lid, plugged it in...pushed "high"...set the time for 30 minutes...changed the weight to "exhaust"... and pushed "start". The display showed the rotating lights for quite awhile then it beeped and went to E10. I then turned the weight back to "airtight" as the manual states. My manual says when it reaches "E1" it will begin the timer countdown. This didn't happen. It went to "E0" and beeped 3 times. After about 3 minutes, it started flashing "E0" and beeping sets of 3 continually. After 2 minutes of that, I pushed "start" and it immediately showed "000" on the display and the steam began to diminish. I heard my jar lids pop closed within 30 seconds. The entire time it was on after "E10", it was shooting steam to the ceiling so much so that clouds of steam were rolling across the ceiling. The second time, I did exactly the same thing, except I used the green weight...same sequence of events and the same result. I called the number in the manual, but the woman I talked to wasn't familiar with the unit, and said she'd ask the "Carey rep" since they had "merged with the Metalware company" She came back on the line and said I should "push start" when it got to "E1", and that steam is supposed to exhaust from the unit to keep proper pressure. I told her I'd used pressure canners/cookers in the past and the amount of steam escaping seemed excessive to me. She repeated her advice. The third and fourth time I followed her instructions, first using the black 10 pound weight, then using the green 15 pound weight. I'm at 550 feet above sea level, by the way. Both results were the same...the machine turned off immediately upon pushing "start" showing "000" with steam diminishing, and lids popping closed. Then I read an answer to a question about the unit and found this from "Johnnie" "After a bit, the Carey will beep and show E10, do nothing...you should allow the Carey to vent until the countdown reaches E0 and then switch the pressure valve to "airtight". The timer will begin shortly after you switch to "airtight"". I tried that 2 more times, once using each weight...both results were the same...the machine started to flash "EEE" and after pushing "start", it shut off. One last time I tried, this time switching to "airtight" at "E1"...it went to "E0" and I waited 10 minutes...listening to continuous beeping and flashing "E0"...then I shut it off. I only bought it for pressure canning, and it won't work for me, so it's either defective, despite the great reviews, or I'm an idiot, which I think is unlikely, or I missed something simple somewhere. So, if anyone has a suggestion, I'm happy to hear it, and thank you...otherwise, it's going back. If I get help that works, I'll up my rating.
