Must-have for families — just watch the charging
By Homerunrocks24 on Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2025
I absolutely love these handheld vacuums — I’ve bought 4 over the past 10 years, and they’ve been a lifesaver with kids around. Lightweight, easy to use, and great for quick cleanups, especially in tight spaces or cars. It’s one of those household tools I always keep close by. That said, the battery charging is the one drawback. You cannot leave it plugged in — if you forget and leave it on the charger, the battery will end up cooked by the next use. It really needs a smart battery or auto shutoff to prevent overcharging. Still a super useful and well-designed product overall. If they fix the battery issue, it’d be a perfect 5-star item.

Very Strong Suction for a Portable/Battery Vacuum. Missing One Important Feature
By Elbeau on Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2023
This vacuum worked excellently for cleaning sand, dirt and dog hair from my SUV. It has almost as strong power as my home vacuum. The photo shows where i cleaned and where i didn't. It works great. Until it doesn't. And therein lies its extremely annoying - and largely inexcusable - shortcoming. It has NO power indicator light. No light to warn of a depleting battery and no light to indicate if it is charging or that the charging is complete. I felt that the great performance many reviews praised would certainly overcome that shortfall. I was wrong. That a highly regarded company like Black & Decker would sell such a product, without this very basic light, which likely would cost it pennies, including the build process, says as much about the company as the product. Bottom line is, regardless of how wonderful the vacuum may work, without the ability to know the state of its battery and when it is fully charged, enters a wholly unnecessary concern and frustration into the use of an otherwise very good product making it untrustworthy. And it doesn't help that it does not stay fully charged if not used for a little while. Bottom line is I don't keep this in or near the vehicle, which is the place I intended to use it, because I cannot trust it will have the power to do its job. Come on B&D! I'm sure many would be willing to pay the 50 cents more to make this otherwise great vacuum useful. This seemingly minor "oversight" had me contemplating giving the product 3, or even 2, stars. But, if you think the light is unimportant and want very good power, I recommend this item. But, be warned: I thought the absence of the power/charging light was no big deal. It is.

Not what I expected - good and bad

First, let me say I've been wanting a handheld for a long time. It was an absolute pain using my upright to vacuum all the stairs! Which means the stairs were filthy! :) I was SO excited to get this! Then I received it. And let me tell you, first impressions, I had scheduled a return. Make sure you understand battery powered handhelds BEFORE you buy this and write a crappy review! I have a 3600 sq ft home. I followed the directions; charged for 16 hours, and then let it run all the way out, which only took a few minutes. Ok fine - first charge....I get it. Back on the charger all that afternoon, probably 6 hours or so. My almost 4 year old granddaughter wanted to "help" clean for Christmas; this vacuum is light enough for her to use and - at that age - FUN! So I let her get under the couch and in the kitchen under the cupboards. She kept turning it off and asking, "ok! What next?" And it lasted maybe 5 or 6 minutes. Well, maybe it was the on-and-off-again that killed it. Back on the charger. I tried it the next morning, and it lasted a few minutes. That's it - it's going back. I started a return. After it was charging for probably 20 hours - really folks, I didn't have a stop watch - I decided to give it the old college try and use it again. I got the edging done, the basement stairs, and a bit onto my area rug where I work out before it died. Could it be?? I started doing research on hand helds - Shark, Bissell, Black + Decker - you name it. Guess what?? I didn't find a SINGLE HANDHELD that boasted lasting 20 minutes; even the expensive $80-$100 handhelds lasted only 15 minutes. I'm not sure what my expectations were but I had hoped to edge everything and be able to vacuum the couch, my pupper's couch, stairs ... all in one swoop. Maybe that'll be possible after i get it good and then only have to sweep over it. But the fact of the matter is, whether you spend $35 or $95, you have about 15 minutes of good suction power before they shut off. Ok that's my story and here's my review! Pros: It is great for suction power. It gets the people hair and the pupper's hair very well (my poor husband - there are 4 female humans and 1 female dog in this house; he is the only male and does not shed like the rest of us). The attachments are wonderful! It is very easy to clean: just pop the filter out, shake, and back in. Rinsing it in water and letting it dry is a breeze as well, plus it saves money on buying new filters (i don't know if this is standard in these hand-helds). I like that it has a little wall piece where you can lock in and store the vacuum off the floor/shelf. Cons: Really, B+D, you could have put a little LED for charging. It would have cost 50 cents and you could have charged $5 more for it. I really want to throw charged battery life in here, but I've already covered it and it's redundant. Plastic. I hate plastic parts. The wall piece is plastic and I'm sure will end up breaking. It's not badly designed, but it's plastic! Overall: After educating myself on dustbusters/handheld vacuums, this is a great little vacuum, and especially for the price. If anything is going to change, it really needs to be a charging LED is installed. A battery life indicator would be nice, but since it only lasts 15 minutes, that maybe overkill. I would recommend this and now that I'm more knowlegable about these products, am excited to use it more!
Good dustbuster from solid brand

Good suction and gets the job done and easy to clean. I bought it to replace an older model and don’t like that the connector to the cord is now flimsy plastic pretty much guaranteeing it will break. Has enough power to pick up what I need but dont know that it could tackle anything heavy duty. Good weight and size. Bought this because it’s a brand name I have trusted over the years but it seems they have cut some corners over the years.
Great between vacuuming days.

Works great. Easy to charge. Easy to clean. I was tired of lugging around the big vacuum cleaner. This makes it easy to get those dust bunnies and the hair off my dark floors between vacumming.

This was the best money I ever spent when I began a home reno. I have used it to vacuum up EVERYTHING you could imagine. This thing is a workhorse, has a great battery life, lightweight, and is so easy to use, empty and clean. It is slightly noisy, but who cares! I don't expect it to be silent when I vacuum. I'm looking to retire this one to my camper, and I will be buying another one . You wont be disappointed!

An essential for cleaning!

I bought this for spot cleaning my guinea pigs' enclosure. This vacuum is an absolute workhorse! Charging: it does not indicate if it is charging, low battery, done charging, etc, with any sort of light. It just dies when it runs out with no indication. Because of this i pig it in at the end of every day. Design: great for small bits. Cleaning my guinea pigs cage, it isn't big/long enough to handle pieces of hay and the inner seal will get stuck open. Noise level: loud, but not unbearably so. My piggies are uncovered by the noise. Cleaning: the vacuum chute (?) and filter are washable, and come perfectly clean with a good soak in hot water and soap. Pick up: an absolute beast when picking up. The only time it slows down is if it is completely blocked.

I specifically bought this vacuum for cat litter. It is lightweight easy to clean and can pick up litter, pet hair, and dust in hard to reach places (There’s vacuum attachments). I have used it on my cat tower and pet beds and I will say the suction is really great, but you need to consistently clean the air filter or hand wash it to keep the suction strong. As far as noise it’s pretty loud but definitely not louder than a normal vacuum. It comes with a hanging attachment that you can screw into the wall and I placed mine in the closet it fits perfectly!
I love B&D Dustbusters, and rates all prior models I owned 5 stars, but this model I rate 4 and recommend another B&D model

I have had two or three B&D dust busters in the past. One of them I had when I first got married in 1988, on the original battery, lasted 12 years! I can't say that I counted the years, but I couldn't believe how long it lasted. Sure, after that long, and on the older technology battery (NiMH or maybe even NiCad), it would only last a couple of minutes on a full charge and then the battery was dead, but most spills only take a minute or two literally. That's my overall LOVE of B&D dust busters. About a year ago, I bought model CHV1410L and absolutely loved that - it's quick and easy to give it a 5 star rating (that model). My son went off to college, and took that model (CHV1410L), so I had to buy another one. Being so many models looking nearly the same, I figured it didn't matter which model I bought - they are all "awesome" right? Well, I've had this one a couple months, and figured I would write this review just to get my two cents in to say "YES - Buy a B&D Dustbuster, but DO NOT buy this model, buy the CHV1410L model instead." I give this one 4 stars instead of 5 stars for 2 reasons. They are MINOR - but nonetheless - I think this model and the CHV1410L are the same price, so buy the CHV1410L model. What don't I LOVE about this model? 1 - to charge it, you have to plug it in. What's so bad about this? well nothing BAD, but, the other model (CHV1410L ) has a "pad" that plugs into the wall, and you simply place it onto the plate-shaped charging disc, where it makes contact and charges. It's nice to not have to plug it in and unplug it every time you want to use it - I know - MINOR - but I personally prefer just setting the hand vac down on the pad to having to plug a wire in every time. 2 - no charging light. OK not a BIG deal, but the other model (CHV1410L , which I prefer) has a charging lamp so you know when it is ready. 3 - the biggest reason why I prefer the CHV1410L model to this model, is because the filter cup basically just sits inside the housing, it does NOT connect or sit tight over the motor and suction housing. Is it loose or did I have a problem? Well, yes. NO, it was not loose, and it functioned perfectly. Then what is my gripe? Just today (and what triggered me writing this), when I went to use it, I noticed it sounded a bit funny - like something rubbing against a bearing or hitting the motor propeller. So I opened it up to empty it and take a look. TO MY SURPRISE - NO FILTER!. What am I saying? I am saying that due to the fact that the filter does not connect via half-turn or bayonet-type (or ANY type) of connect, and just sits inside the clear plastic housing, it means that the last person to empty the main housing must have not noticed that the filter emptied out with the debris into the trash container, then after emptying it out, put it back together not knowing that the filter was missing. So THIS to me is a poor design. Again no problems functionally, but due to the design of not connecting or clipping and staying put, it means that the filter is going to simply fall out into the trash like it did to one of my family members. And whether it was me, my wife, or whatever, the point is we've been using these things for years, but this "gotcha" of a floating filter design has resulted just a couple months later of me now having to buy another filter, AND, I will have to take this one completely apart down to the motor innards to try to clean the hair and other debris inside where I can see it, where it should NEVER get to. And just to add another small negative in this filter thing: when I search for "filter for HHVI315JO42" on Amazon... none found. Someone says the VF110 fits, but, when you find that filter on Amazon, it has a text box to "see if your model fits" - when I enter this exact model, it says "do you mean" another, similar model (ending in 32 instead of 42), and even if you click that alternate, the message "we are NOT sure if this fits your model". And worse - when I search for the MANUAL online for this, I do find it quickly. But in the manual for this model, NO PART NUMBER MENTIONED FOR THE FILTER. OK, so you get me now. Nothing huge, and this vacuum operates flawlessly, and I can't knock anyone who rates this as 5 stars. But, with my history of owning a few of B&D dust busters, and LOVING every one with a 5 star rating, when you read above, it should be understood why I prefer the model that drove away with my son to his college dorm instead of this one.
