Perfect for DD-WRT and VPN.

I got this after doing research and learning the R7000 is one of the best routers to install DD-WRT on and use as a OpenVPN router. Because it’s so popular, there are tons of guides and tutorials online about the R7000 and it’s uses so no matter what you use it for, help is available. DD-WRT opens up a tons of features and customizable settings for this router, including the ability to easily overclock to 1000MHz. The dual core processor is powerful enough to handle 256bit VPN protocols (OpenVPN is what I use) as well as handling lots of clients and traffic without slowing down your network. It’s also great to use as a firewall, attached to NAS, access point, switch, router, VPN server or client, and lots of other things can be set up directly and easily in DD-WRT. Plus, you can get it used/refurbished for great prices. Just be sure to get the correct version. There were several versions of this router (I believe there’s is a v1, v2, and v3) and the newer versions make it difficult or impossible to flash with 3rd party software like DD-WRT. Overall, I highly recommend this for any home use.

Purchased April 10th, 2018 and it stopped working July 1st, 2018.

I ordered the R7000 on April 10th, 2018 and received the router on April 11th. Very fast shipping. I did not care much for the Google Play Store Apps available for this router, but I tried to give them a chance. The Disney Circle App was awful as well. I upgraded from the Almond Plus by Securifi. The interface and the app available on the Almond is so much better. I took a chance with this this router and yesterday, July 1st, 2018 (not even 90 days later) the Netgear Nighthawk R7000's internet port completely stopped working. I noticed that the router was always really hot to the touch and assumed this was normal. I can still connect to the local network, but the R7000 is not able to receive internet at all. I called my ISP and they couldn't see the router at all. After removing the cable from the router and running in directly to my laptop, internet was fine. This router is no more than a paper weight now. I am going to try and get it replaced. Maybe I received a bad CERTIFIED refurbished router. If they will not honor the replacement, then I will more than likely return to using Almond Securifi. I just do not understand how a router at this price point could have so many flaws. This review is based on my own purchase and is non-bias. I will update the outcome and rating based on my experience. As of right now, I can not recommend this router to anyone.
