Truly Expandable Single Level Shelf
By K9LeatherWorks on Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2018
I have had one of these shelves in silver for many many years but it has no name or manufacturer on it. All the other "expandable" shelves I have tried, while some being sturdy and well made, all are not truly expandable but are two pieces of totally different sizes where one slides out from under another. Made that way, there is always a "step-down" somewhere along the top of the shelf and you can't set items there without them falling over. When I opened this box and saw that they were the shelves I had been searching for, I was ecstatic! These two pieces fit together so that no matter how long or short you set the shelves, the result is a flat shelf with no step-down. It is true that one of the shelves is slightly deeper from front to back than the other but they slide together horizontally. Fitting together in this way presents no usage problem at all. I have no idea how much weight they will hold but for my kitchen cabinets to make more shelf space for dishes, mixing bowls, etc., they are wonderful. The one I have had for years and used constantly still looks brand new. It has not bowed or bent in any way. In fact, I have heavy enameled cast iron Le Creuset pieces sitting on it so it is plenty sturdy for any kitchen or bath application. It is very nice looking and would be appropriate to sit on a countertop if needed. I am very very happy with this purchase.

Serviceable

Better than the older traditional thin wire racks, but not necessarily my fav. +- Bronze color is nice, although it does scuff/scratch easily. + Wide flat steel slats is a favorite, much easier to stack objects on. + You can condense this to a single shelf for a mostly solid flat surface for objects or an extended shelf. + The slats and metal of the overall shelf are sturdy/durable + As each section has 4 legs you can use each portion of the shelf independently. - However, as an extended shelf you then have extra legs on the lower area awkwardly spaced and it looks cluttered. If you put at full extension to attempt lining up the legs for a cleaner look - it doesn't work. They bump into each other/don't fit exactly and you end up seeing all the legs. - There is some lack of craftsmanship: * legs are not even or completely straight/perpendicular to shelf * because of above you have some shelf wobble. * plastic rubber caps over the ends of the legs - so legs not flush or look as "clean" as possible. * because of above, if cap lost/damaged etc, as often happens for people, shelf will wobble more. * see above on scuffing There is another shelf similar to this I previously bought that I love its extended shelf function, however the price has become astronomical. This reminds me of it, but at a respectable price (~$20 at time of purchase). While it says it is stackable, I doubts stability in that scenario as I do not see how it will stay so if bumped. However, I haven't tried/tested that yet so cannot confirm. All in all, i am not in love with this - but it is flexible utility and serves purpose for a moderate price. It's a good product for what it is.
