Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Update: The function control knob is useless. I can only operate the oven on the Bake setting. Bought it Nov ‘19, started to break in the spring, now useless in July ‘20. I love the functionality. It’s a toaster. It’s an air fryer. It’s a broiler. And it does it all well. Like most relationships, the first six months were great. Background: All of the controls are mechanical knobs. The most important knob, the Function dial, has seven settings. For those of a certain age, it works exactly like old television channel controls - you apply enough force to jump to the next setting. This knob gets a lot of action: Toast a bagel in the morning, Air Fry some tater tots for lunch, and bake something for dinner. About a month ago, setting the function to Toast wouldn’t power the oven. But it was an intermittent problem - turn the knob to the next setting and then back to Toast and we’d be in business. Of course, being mechanical, I knew the all-important Function knob was living on borrowed time... Present: Desiring to broil some fresh deep sea scallops, I set the timer and turned the Function knob to Broil. And then Nothing. Nada. Zip. No heat, no oven light, no fan. No amount of cajoling the Function control would make the Broil setting work. Every other setting behaved correctly, but I wanted Broiled scallops, not Toasted ones. In the end, I had pan-seared scallops. Tasty, yes, but soured by the aftertaste of a defective appliance taking up valuable counter space... So my 7-function oven is down to 5.5 (Toast still acts up at times). With every mode change, deep inside I cringe, fearful that I’ve expended all of my allotted Air Fryer sessions. Today I embark on a new journey - contacting CuisineArt and invoking the Limited Warranty. My Function knob has violated the contract between consumer and manufacturer. I hold hope that a remedy exists and it shall be achieved with a minimum of shipping and handling. Note on the controls overall: As I mentioned, all of them are mechanical. The temperature setting is an analog dial behaving like a rheostat, or dimmer switch. I never tested the accuracy of the temperature with an oven thermometer, but it is possible that temps may vary between ovens. I eventually got a general sense of what temperature to use through trial and error. The toaster mode has its own dedicated timer. It’s a spring-loaded timer which is powered by the action of turning the knob. This kind of timer typically isn’t very precise, and for toasting that’s fine. Light, Medium, and Dark are vague terms and you quickly learn your favorite angle to twist the knob. However, the other 6 (well, 5 for me) functions use a similar timer control. This control has 10 minute graduations, but I never trusted them. I advise always checking your cooking time with your watch or frequent peeks in the window. Final perspective: If money wasn’t an issue, I’d get the version with digital controls. Yeah, it might break too, but it won’t break through regular use. Also, the temperature and time settings would be more accurate and precise.
