UPDATE: Some pro tips that I've learned as I continue to use this amazing product. - For double coated dogs, consider following the instruction to remove the extra layer of the sprayer. - Hold the sprayer away from the coat and work the water or shampoo into the coat. - Remember to do the vacuum stroke to help dry the coat. Go slow with the vacuum stroke. I still love this tool. I use it frequently. I even like the shampoo. I still also do a full bath for my dogs, and I have a dryer that I use after bark bathing or regular bathing. It is still a great way to get dogs clean in between full baths. I still strongly recommend this product. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just bathed a spayed female with a thick coat, an intact mama dog and her two 5-month-old puppies. In an hour. With cleanup. And one of the puppies a little hesitant. The product worked just as advertised. I have Belgian Sheepdogs. This is a medium length, double-coated breed. It worked very well on my dogs. I'd like to address some of the negatives I read. 1. Water. Yes, this product uses water. Yes, your dog may shake a little. The trick is to use it like you use your carpet shampoo machine. Dispense shampoo, vacuum up excess for several strokes. Rinse. Vacuum up the excess. I actually soaked Pearl, shown in the photos attached, pretty well. She shook a few times, but she was pretty clean afterwards. Yes, I got a little wet. Compared to the dog wash, much LESS wet. Yes, there was a little water on the grooming table, and a few dribbles on the floor. Solution: extra towels next time. 2. Machine leaks. I think it's more that I sloshed as I emptied the tank, or filled the fresh water side. Mine did not leak, other than the drips I made. And those were not substantial. Solution: extra towels next time. 3. The dog gets too wet. See 1 above. Vacuum a LOT in between wash and rinse strokes. Also, go slowly with the strokes. 4. The machine does not get deep enough. If you read the instructions, you'll note that you can take a layer off the shampoo head, making the brush tines a little longer. Worked very well on my VERY heavy coated spayed female, and she is in heavy shed mode right now. I also lifted her top coat and worked a little deeper. Be sure to rinse well if you do that. I also feel compelled to express here that this is not a replacement for periodic grooming with a pro, or getting yourself to the self-serve dog wash. But it can put some distance between the expense and the hassle of those things. And your groomer might not charge you that extra-dirty-dog charge any more. (fingers crossed) Not only that - but the dirty water was dirty. Really dirty. I'm very happy that my dogs are now slightly less dusty right now. 5. Priming. That part was easy and fast. I have no idea why anyone would complain about it. 6. Shampoo. This is the only thing that worries me, because if one of the dogs decides that the prescribed shampoo makes her itchy, I won't be able to use it. I would encourage Bissell to formulate a shampoo without laurel sulfate if possible, and one that moisturizes. My work around, meantime, will be to use another dry shampoo that I have, and use the machine to rinse. UPDATE: I'm not displeased with the shampoo. Their coats look great, and no noticeable reaction at about 24 hours after shampoo. 7. The bathtub is easier. You, dear reviewers, have a much better back that I do. I put my dogs up on the grooming table and I got to stand up the whole time, dispensing hot dog treats generously. 8. Noise. Non-issue at my house. Dogs are used to the vacuum, don't mind the noise. If you have a vacuum sensitive dog, run the machine while giving treats a few times before you try to bathe. And make it a party with the treats. Also, this is a similar machine to what your groomer likely uses. If you take your dog to the groomer, the noise may not be a scary thing. While this product does not replace groomer time for my show dogs, it makes in between bathing much easier on me. I'm really pleased with it. I highly recommend this product.

Did nothing but get my floors wet and my dog kind of wet
By Thea C on Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2017
Bought it because my dog (Collie Alaskan Malamute mix) frequently gets really dirty after going to the dog park and he's deathly afraid of getting into the tub. He's almost 100lbs so I can't lift him into it. In the spring and summer, I bathe him outside with the hose. From nov-march, he pretty much never gets a bath. I wanted this mostly for the colder months when I can't use the hose outside. Assembly is easy. Soap smells good. I'm wondering if I can maybe use other brands of rinseless shampoos. Hmm... Ease of use after making sure my dog doesn't run away, not super easy but not too horrible either. Water got everywhere but I think that's moreso my fault because I keep forgetting to release the spray button when lifting the spray away from his fur. Does it get my dog clean? I took my dog hiking and his legs and underside got a bit dirty after getting into the creek. Slightly muddy. Thought it'd be the perfect time to test this. Did not really clean my dog. First of all, he has long double coated fur that just absorbed half the water that the suction was not going to grab most of. Also, since it's supposed to rinse from the skin up, didn't really work either since his fur was so thick. He hasn't had a bath in 3 months so I know the water in the tank should be brown but it was a little cloudy at most, probably from the soap. thirdly, the dirtiest parts of him (his legs and paws) will never get clean with this. You just can't put the spray flush against his legs. True, he'll probably dry faster though since I technically used less water. Worth the money? Absolutely not. UNLESS, MAYBE, I had a dog without a thick undercoat. It unfortunately took me way over the returnable time frame to get my dog used to the noise and the spray so I cannot return it so I guess I'm stuck with it. I'll try it again when it's warmer maybe and the dog park gets dusty. Maybe it'll do a better job of cleaning a dusty dog than a muddy one.

Maybe NOT for all Breeds

I received the Bissell BarkBath yesterday and whipped that thing out as fast as I could (my dogs are pretty damn dirty) I was so excited! I watched all the YouTube video tutorials beforehand, so I would be ready for this new invention. Bissell claima that it doesn't make a mess, you can bathe your dog in an evening gown even! I happened to be wearing my pajamas, but they were clean pajamas and, to me, that's about as good as an evening gown. My dogs didn't mind the noise, it's like a vacuum, but not nearly as loud as mine. It got them wet, it got me wet and it got my floor VERY wet. So much for not making a mess. Of course, my dogs have waterproof coats that are about 4 inches in length, so the water rolled right off of them, but it managed to get them wet eventually. This thing is supposed to clean from the skin up. It didn't reach their skin - about an inch of fur was left dry. There wasn't enough suction to catch all the water. I used an entire tank of water, but the dirty water tank only was 1/4 filled when I was done trying (2 hours). I think we need a super duper version of the BarkBath, like we need super duper versions of everything else dog related here or maybe BarkBath shouldn't claim to work on all breeds? It just didn't do the job for my Newfoundlands and I was left disappointed. Very disappointed. So! I called Bissell and, of course, this is "highly unusual" for the unit. Yeah, whatever. They are giving me a replacement. I told them that the unit needs to be tested on every single breed before they should make any claims about it working on every single breed. I was told that it had been tested on every breed. Wow. Impressive! Considering that there are at least 339 different breeds and a ton of cross breeds out there, I'm kinda doubting their claim. Anyway, I DO think this could be a wonderful machine for dogs with shorter hair ...maybe? I do recommend it for any dog who has fur that's less than 2 inches long, but for big ole furry beasts like mine? Nope. And before anyone says or thinks that I didn't alter the unit by removing one of the plates to lengthen the prongs (insert buzzer sound here) I did. Clean up entailed removing my soaked pajamas and toweling off the dogs. When I took the dirty water tank off, it spilled down the front of my pajamas AND mopping the entire floor that was completely soaked. The dogs were *supposed* to be dry after using this thing, but they were WET. It took towels AND 6 hours of air time for them to be damp and longer to be dry. PS When I spoke with Bissell about the tool not reaching my dogs' skin, I was asked if I had cleaned my dogs first, as I should. Hmm. No. Isn't the point of this thing to clean dirty dogs?!

I thought my fellow dogs would appreciate a review from the actual bathee. (Yes, bathee is a dog word.) I've been bathed in showers, tubs, lakes, pools and rivers. I have sensitive skin, which is why my people don't get my hair cut. I'm a shaggy mutt with a humble air and a fear of certain loud noises ( fireworks and thunder); however vacuums don't bug me and I absolutely love a good blow- dry. So the vacuum- like noise of this machine is not a problem for this dog. I had my first bark bath today, given by the alpha female, J. J had trouble with the little screw that holds the hose holder in place. She almost stripped the head just screwing it on. " they need better screws, Maxie" she told me. Down went half a ratings star. She got it assembled and filled it, got it primed, called me over ( we were in the garage) and had me stand on a folded up blanket. Then she basically wet- vacuumed me. The shampoo came out just fine, the rinse worked just fine. But really, there was no great way to wash my head and feet. I'm very particular about my feet, and the hard plastic on them, even a very light touch, made me very nervous. Down went half a star. (I'd rather have them scrubbed by hand.) And I did go off twice to shake, but to be honest, there wasn't a lot of water to shake off. All in all, J told me she thinks it's a good tool for a fast bath. She does plan to remove the end piece of the vacuum tool in order to get deeper into my fur. I do look very handsome after the bath, so that's a big plus. Next bath, J says, will be outdoors. (And yes, that is my beloved Mr Bill toy on the lawn-- purchased on Amazon.)
Made bath time for a senior dog less traumatic!

My dog has never particularly enjoyed bath time but now that he's a senior, he sees the bathtub and it's sheer panic. He was abused before he came to live with me and going to a groomer was never an option for us. The Bissell Barkbath has made bath time easier to survive - for both of us! First, it's portable. I always dread the long, slow walk towards the bathroom. The one where halfway there he recognizes where we're heading, so then I have to carry him the rest of the way, then scramble to shut the door behind him in time. He's a medium sized dog, so putting him in the tub also created a worry that he may hurt himself attempting to escape from it. Bissell's Barkbath has slowed me to bring bath time to him, in a bathtub free room. He gets antsy, so I appreciate the extended length of the hose, so that I can turn and twist and follow him as needed. The noise isn't awful - if anything, the noise of the roaring water pouring into the tub is way more traumatic for him than the vacuum-like noise from the machine. And I don't think the noise is as loud as a vacuum's - similar but not as apt to send my cats into DEFCON 5, desperately searching for a place to hide. The mat provided does a nice job at containing any messes. His hair used to clog my bathtub worse than my own, so I was worried about it clogging the machine, even though it's advertised as non-clogging. So far, we have had no issues with clogs - the hair really does just wipe away when it's built up on the screen. He also has a thyroid condition and he is prone to dandruff. I was concerned about getting him clean because of his thick fur. Sometimes I had a hard time getting him clean to the skin even bathing him by hand and scrubbing at him as gently as possible. But I don't see any debris or dandruff left on him after I bathe him with the Barkbath so we're going to call that a win. The final benefit that I see is how much less water I use. This might be personal preference, but when I bathe him in the tub, he's dirty. I mean, DIRTY. Nasty ring around my tub dirty, and he's an inside dog. Dirty as in, I question him each time he gets a bath - dude, what do you do when I'm not home? Anyway, because of this, after I wash him, I then let all of the water out of the tub, to then refill it again so I could rinse him in clean water. I wouldn't want to stand in dirty water and though he probably didn't care since he had all that funk in his hair anyway and probably worked hard to accumulate it like that, it mattered to me. But with the Barkbath, I use way less water. Which means now I can take a 20 minute shower and not feel bad or flip out when I get the water bill. Overall, a big fat YAY for the Barkbath from us. The dog may not love it, but it's contributed to a lower stress level for us both.

Like Kenneth Driscoll, I too am paralyzed and am in a wheelchair. I have two German Shepherds named Rolex & Bulova (my WATCH dogs), who also serve as my Assistance Dogs. I am paralyzed from the waist down and have two BK amputations and so I do pretty much everything from my WC! Bathing my two shepherds is not an easy task. I spent $140 on them coming to my house and doing it last time. This machine, made it SO EASY for me to do! Both my dogs don't run or are afraid of the noise of the machine, because since they were puppies, I've used the vacuum on them to help eliminate the hair! I have to separate the two while I bathe them, as Rolex keeps trying to pull Bulova out of the way, because he wants to do it again! The Bissell machine I consider a wonderful addition to my home! It is so easy to use, my dogs look forward to it! It was an absolute godsend when they got sprayed by a skunk! Rolex got the worst, but I used a skunk eliminator on him and the Bissell Portable Dog Bath System worked wonders on him and the parts after using it on him were easily cleaned with no telltale signs or remains of skunk left behind! Of course, they just got hit in the face and I didn't have to use it on the whole dog! I use it on regular basis on both my dogs. It helps keep theme clean and is very easy to use from my wheelchair! The dogs actually LOVE having a bath now! I am just amazed that it took some company so long to come up with something like this! Kudos to the Bissell CO for inventing the BarkBath system!

I really really really wanted to love this machine or at least really kind of like it. It's just not happening for me! I run a small boarding kennel for rescue dogs and had many differert size and different coat textures here to choose from for a trial run yesterday after getting the unit. First trial.. 23lb female weinner dog/boston mix, short/slick coat. Most of the water/shampoo just ran off of her and in the floor and was barely removing water into dirty water tank, hmm.. so maybe she didn't have enough or thick enough hair for the spray nozzles to go through to hold or get water under her coat and to let it suction it back off..? Nozzle much to big and bulky to attempt her legs or anything other than a section of her back really. Trial 2.. nice healthy lab girl, nice thick coat, 60lbs.. pretty much same experience lots of water not getting suctioned up and some running off into floor as I sprayed, she did get pretty wet so it didn't all run off but the hard plastic nozzle design makes it almost impossible to create enough suction to remove much water and forget trying to get the hard wide cleaning nozzle to really do anything to the legs or upside down to do her belly. (If your dog will lay down and roll over for you it may be a different story) Trial 3.. 75lb very thick and heathy, redbone girl, slick coat pretty much the same experience. Some water still ran off her without suctioning much up, so the areas I could do were pretty wet. I could only manage to do a little of her back and some on her sides with her standing. Any part of their body that wasn't completly 'flat', I had a hard time doing any good with it. I have several more dogs to choose from to try this again but I'm thinking I'll pack the unit up and send it back. The 2 star rating is for the concept of a machine like this and it looks nice, just not effective enough for me to justify the purchase. A little softer nozzle or maybe even a very slightly curved one would be more effective. Maybe a few different attachment options?? Also I was trying to be pretty conservative with the sprayer and not wanting to just waste the shampoo. It still ended up being almost the full 16 oz bottle of shampoo at my 3 attempts to wash their backs and sides.

As a dog owner and dog rescue volunteer, I'm a huge Bissell fan. I have the Crosswave, Spot Bot, a large carpet cleaner, steam mop, Steam Shot, and the PowerEdge hardwood floor cleaner. So, of course, I wanted to try the BarkBath. Upon opening the box, I noticed there was water down by the clean water tank like the machine had been used before. =( I wondered if Amazon sent me a used product but the rest of the machine seemed sparking clean so I decided to keep going. I followed the set up and priming instructions and bribed my first pooch to enter the bathing zone. The barkbath tool has a setting that you can switch from shampoo to rinse. Then you use the trigger to spray the dog and when you've released the trigger, you can use the tool to suck up the water on your dog. Unfortunately, the tool continues to leak water even after you're released the trigger. It's impossible to get the dog any less than soaked when the tool continuously drips water. It will eventually stop but it takes a good 30-60 seconds of shaking off the loose water before I can even attempt to vacuum up some of the soapy water on my dog. The noise doesn't seem to bother my dogs and they hold still fairly well. Even when I put warm water in the tank, it comes out pretty cold by the time we get started but I guess I should have expected that. BarkBath seemed like a good idea but it's not working out for us. I'm in touch with Bissell to see if there's any troubleshooting that can be done for the leaking part and if it gets better, I'll be sure to update. But I'd have say this is my least favorite product and it's pretty worthless. We'll stick with going to our local dog wash. Update: Bissell is having me return my barkbath tool for a new one. I will update if it works better. 1/4/19

I have 2 elderly dogs (a boxer and a golden) that are too old to get into the tub for baths, so I thought this would be a good solution. ***Please note that I may have received a defective/returned unit from Amazon. The packaging had been previously opened, and the reservoir had liquid in it when I received it. Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking and got rid of all the packaging, so I can't exchange it to find out if my experience is due to defect or if this is how it is intended to work*** Pros: The unit comes with separate comb plates for long and short coats. The unit seemed to do a good job getting through the boxer's short coat. The shampoo formula was gentle enough for my allergic-to-everything boxer, no skin problems afterwards. I was a little apprehensive about a "mulberry" scent, but it is actually nice and definitely helped with my always-stinky golden. I also bought the skunk formula shampoo, but haven't used it (fingers crossed that I never will). Cons: There was water everywhere. Even when not pressing the trigger, water and shampoo were squirting out of the nozzle. I didn't notice this in the product video, so that is why I suspect there might be something wrong with the unit I received. Because it was always spraying, the suction/drying function did not work well, so I was left with a damp boxer and a very drippy golden retriever. The unit is very, very loud, much louder than in the product video (in fact it's louder than my shop vac) and the mat you set it on does nothing to quiet it. Again, this may be due to a mechanical problem with my unit, but for dogs that are sensitive to loud noises, like my golden, this is a big issue. In order to change between the short and long coat comb plates you have to use a screwdriver and take the whole nozzle apart and put it back together, which is tough while also wrangling wet, freaked out dogs (would be better if it was something that could just clip/snap on and off for quick changes). The collection tank is open which means it can and will get spilled (would be great if there was a cap or seal of some sort). The quick start guide is not for first use/beginners, it skips over important steps, I think it's just meant for helping seasoned users remember what to do. Tips: Be sure to use on a surface that can get wet, bring lots of towels, and plan on needing to mop up the floor afterwards-- my kitchen floor has never been cleaner! Read the full instruction manual before using, don't just rely on the quick-start guide. And of course the cardinal rule of online shopping, which I broke, keep your packaging in case you need to exchange.
Great in between bath system

I used this bath system on my two dogs; one is a black German Shepherd (85lbs) and the other is a Siberian Husky (53lbs). The system did an okay job on them. It seemed to work much better on my Shepherd than on the husky. There is just so much hair on the husky and it's a completely different texture than my shepherd's. My dogs are indoor/outdoor dogs, so they spend equal time in the house as they do outdoors. I will still need to give them a good old fashioned bath in the tub because this really doesn't get them as clean as I like, but this works well for the in between cleans. When scratching either dog, I could still feel the grime on them the next day after their baths. It wasn't bad, but it was closer to their skin where I don't think this system really reaches. For example, the bath tub water will be a really dark brown when bathing my dogs the old fashioned way, but the tank water was only a light colored brown, so I know it wasn't getting all the way through. I also think that this system is designed more specifically for medium to larger breed dogs. With that being said, I wish the part of the system that actually runs along the dog's coat was bigger. Or at least have the option for a larger attachment. This is more of a one size fits all, but that is not the case as there is a big difference between the size and coat of my two dogs. It would be nice to be able to have it more customizable to the dog that is being groomed. This was okay for my shepherd, even though it took about 20 minutes and I wasn't able to get his legs and paws. The husky was a different story. I was only able to get down maybe halfway through her coat to try and clean her. Also, the switch between shampoo and rinse being on the tank instead of on the hose is a little inconvenient when you're trying to keep your dog in one place with one hand and using the other hand to hold the hose. All in all, it is an okay dog grooming tool. I will definitely be keeping mine as I do feel it helps keep the dogs cleaner for longer without having to bath them in my tub. Hopefully, in time, the system will evolve and address some of these issues I found.
