A "manly" cast iron dutch oven
By Donna Spinelli on Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2025
My husband has been looking at getting a cast iron dutch oven for a long time ... ya know, a MANLY one and not one of those pretty enamel coated ones. Well, he was shocked, surprised and happy when this was delivered and I told him that it was primarily his. If I do borrow it to cook a great roast, I told him I'd let him know because he'll be the one picking it up and placing in the oven and taking it out of the oven because it's heavy duty! He especially likes it because the lid doubles as a skillet pan. The only negative is the silicone handle covers - they're too loose fitting and its recommended you still use pot holders; I'd be afraid they would slip and create more of a hazard situation. But I'm still rating this purchase as a 5-star product.

The roughest surface I've seen on cast iron
By Ernie Beckley on Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2022
I bought this primarily for baking bread, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Fortunately, I was able to snag this at a huge discount during Amazon's two-day sale. For what I need, this works. That's the best thing I can say about it. If you plan on using this for anything else, you might want to look elsewhere. Why? The pre-seasoned inner surface of the pan and skillet are horrible. They are the roughest surfaces I have ever seen on cast iron, and that includes the cheap garbage you can purchase at WalMart. These surfaces may be "seasoned", but they are nowhere near the kind of non-stick you expect from cast iron. I wouldn't even attempt to make eggs or pancakes with these. You'd be scrubbing the pans for days. I suppose if you cooked with them long enough (how much bacon can you eat?), the roughness would eventually fill in...at least that's the theory. I don't have that kind of patience. But again, that doesn't bother me. I already knew these were going to be bad new from a surface perspective. For what I need, the surface doesn't matter. Even so, I will eventually take my grinder to the interior surfaces of both to smooth them down, then re-season them in my oven. That will take care of the roughness. But for now, with a bit of parchment paper, they work just fine for baking bread. BTW, I'd recommend using a grinder on any of the new cast iron produced today. You will love the results. Just make sure to do it outside or in your garage, and wear a mask or respirator. You can pick up a cheap grinder on Amazon or WalMart. I have a lot of vintage cast iron that came machined from the factory. Using the grinder on new cast iron gives you a result that is close enough to the vintage surface. Anyway, know what you're getting before you buy this set.
