Perfect product if you use the right cat litter
By Özge on Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2019
It's the best pet product I've ever had! I have two cats that are 11 years old and I've tried many different cat litter boxes, including semi-automatic ones. I had to clean all types of them daily, otherwise they were smelling and my cats didn’t want to use them. But this product saved my days: I didn’t clean the litter for a week, it was still clean and wasn’t smelling. (Update, 8 months after the original comment: It still works perfectly with non-clumping silica cat litter for a week without cleaning!) The negative experiences I read in Amazon were about the noise, disposable receptacles, and stuck litter on the rakes. Here are my experiences with those matters: The noise is not more than a hairdryer, so it does not disturb me much. The disposable receptacles could be a problem if you always have to buy them. But it is not necessary because you can reuse them by using bin bags in them. I can recommend you to put double receptacles and lids to make it more stable. The most common problem was stuck litter in the rakes and at the bottom of the box, also the motor struggling to move forward through the clumped litter. I tried 6 different cat litters to have the best results and 2 of them didn’t have those problems at all. Those two were light-type litters, one is non-clumping silica and another is clumping plant-based litters. Any brand of non-clumping silica and/or clumping plant-based litters work very well. Here are my experiences: -Clumping bentonite litter: The litter could be stuck on the rakes and you need to clean the rakes and the bottom. But feces and urine go into the container, although it may force the motor. It is necessary to clean the bottom by emptying the box usually. But it doesn’t smell except the stuck ones on the rakes. As a result: not very practical. -Non-clumping bentonite litter: It is stuck a little bit on the rakes, but a lot of on the bottom. Because urine doesn’t go in the container and it does not absorb the smell much, it smells a lot. As a result: not recommended. -Clumping plant-based litter: It doesn’t stick in the rakes or on the bottom, neither forces motor while working because of lightness. It works perfectly on the box. However, the light pieces of the litter were carried on the paws of my cats to the other rooms, so I had to give up using it. As a result: recommended. -Non-clumping plant-based litter: Similar to the non-clumping litter. Because urine doesn’t go in the container and it has a low absorbing capacity, it smells. Also, it is stuck a little bit on the rakes. As a result: not recommended. -Clumping silica litter: Although it's supposed to clump and take the urine in the container, it doesn't clump. The fine silica pieces get stuck on the bottom because of the urine, and get harder and higher in time so force the rakes. It is quite hard to clean the bottom from the stuck litter. As a result: not recommended. -Non-clumping silica litter: Although it doesn’t clump and urine isn’t taken in the container, it works perfectly! The litter doesn’t smell up to a week for two cats. Because the litter pieces are light, it doesn’t force the motor, so motor work perfect for feces. After a week, I emptied the container bag and the whole litter. There was no suck in the rake or on the bottom. As a result: highly recommended! I can recommend to empty and clean the whole box and the rakes weekly for the best performance of the product. (I had a single cat version for my two cats (because of the limited space) and it works for two cats very well. The first product I had was not working properly, the motor stops working in the middle of cleaning. But when I sent the video of it to the customer service, I was immediately sent a new product and the new one works very well. This is as important as the product’s function for me. Without very good customer service of Amazon and LitterMaid, I wouldn’t buy a new one and I wouldn’t use it.)

Bring Back Classic LitterMaid
By MK on Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021
OMG! This LitterMaid is more work than it is worth. I am sorry, but the old version was so much more efficient. The rake should have blades that go all the way to the sides of litterbox. The blades are also spaced to far apart. More blades are needed. There is not enough litter in the box, cats need around 3 inches to dig, and cover. The old version from 20 years ago was so much better. It worked purrfectly from day one, no problems at all. No sticking in midair. No leaving wet cat waste stuck in blades or on bottom of litter box. Need more litter in bottom of litter box. The old version even came with a small brush to keep track and sensors clean. Because they must be kept clean in order for the rake to run properly. I realize it has been 20 years since I used a LitterMaid because of living with someone who was allergic to pet dander. They passed away in 2014, now I have two cats again. Now my health is not as it was. My old excuse was I worked all the time in the old days, and LitterMaid was wonderful. But this new version is unreliable. I was going to buy another one because i have two cats, but I will try another brand. I am so heartbroken it is not as good as it used to be. This single cat Littermaid should be so much better. Somehow LitterMaid cut corners on efficientcy, and reliability. This is just a awful product. Sorry to be so brutal, but my money from Soc.Sec. is much less then when I worked. Errors like this hurts my everyday living. This single cat LitterMaid is not even worth $1.00. Shame on you for making a cheap piece of Cat waste. Please let others see my review. Maybe another person who has little money won't hurt their purse trying to make their life easier with this product. Darn it! I just knew LitterMaid was dependable and safe to purchase. I am so disappointed! 10/17/21 WELL! This LitterMaid continues to wear me out. I just shut it down! It took me half an hour just to clean the cat waste from everywhere except the litter bin. This piece of cat waste is horrible! I got it as clean as I could get it for the video. I was to embarrassed to let you see the mess it made. The LitterMaid I owned back around the year 2000 was a dream. Never! Never had problems like this. Wet cat waste was smeared all over the sides and rake. None was in the litter bin. I still need to clean some from the back left side. I am to old for this mess. $80.00 down the drain. And being on Soc. Sec. This hurt! LITTERMAID, YOU SUCK! UPDATE 11-11-21, WELL! For a LitterMaid self cleaning litter box this is a shameful product. LitterMaid was a dependable product almost in every Cat household for many years. It was a necessity in my home because of shift work. I knew that my Classic from year 1999 was working dependably while I was at the hospital. This item today is not any of the above. It does not remove the wet waste very well, problems with wet waste sticking to bottom, and or crumbling, therefore waste not removed. The new design is the problem. You must have 3-4 inches of litter in litter bed. Why did they change the design? Waste of money. Not dependable. Bring back old design. Be number 1 again. UPDATE!!!! 12 -3-21. I used to work a lot of different shifts. But the LitterMaid in 1999 was a true Gem. It worked purrfectly from day one. Why they changed the design to these new blue ones has my brain in a spin. Their Corncob Litter I just purchased says to put 3-4 inches in litter box. Max line I think is 1.5 inches. Not sure, but maybe 1.5 inches. So how is the new Blue supposed to work. No matter which litter you use it is designed to fail.

I bought two of these 3 years ago, and they still work fine. If you don't pay attention and overfill them (user error), which is easy to do, they can pile up the litter and get stuck. I imagine that they are as easy to clean as any automatic litter box. They are a little noisy and I can hear them from the next room. I bought a 3rd one two years ago and had to return in because it was used and BROKEN, not new like advertised (There was litter in it, and it wouldn't complete a cycle without getting stuck... I never even put litter in it). The replacement was new and did work fine. We still have that one too. It's really easy to dispose of the waste. We line the receptacles and toss that so that we can keep costs down. All in all a decent machine if you pay attention to the instructions and dispose of the waste regularly.
Amazing if used correctly!

(Update: after 11 months, the rake stopped working. I emailed the company, sent over some information and received a new one in the mail! Easy warranty process!) We have one cat and one litter box. Tl,dr: works great with regular stirring and deep cleaning in between. We bought this machine because we love having our cat, but didn’t want to deal with feces and smell. The biggest difference in this machine working for you like it should is the maintenance and type of litter used. Our cleaning routine includes primarily stirring the crystals daily, this makes the biggest difference between a healthy litter box and having a puddle of urine at the bottom. Stirring daily makes sure the crystal keep doing their job of absorbing and eliminating smells. We remove the solids receptacle and replace weekly. After about three weeks when we begin to smell the urine and the crystals don’t absorb as well, we do a deep clean of the machine. We stir the litter one last time to make sure nothing is stuck the bottom and pour it into a trash bag. We lift the top of the machine, remove the rake, and rinse it and the pan. We’ve learned through trial that fabuloso works best to remove any lingering scent from the pan and helps keep everything clean and smelling fresh, so we pour some in the pan and scrub it and the rake. We dry it and put everything back together, then fill it to the mark with litter. We’ve tried all kinds of non clumping crystal litters with this machine in hopes of finding the one that works the best. Ultra Pearls Crystal Litter purchased from Publix was the recommendation I saw in the reviews. Tried it, it was okay, but after a week would begin to smell of urine. We just assumed it was common with non clumping litter. This was with daily stirring. We used it for a few months and decided to try other brands. PetSafe scoop free and Fresh step crystal litter both reduced the urine smell compared to Ultra Pearls, but still didn’t last more than 2 weeks before the smell was strong and needed to be changed. This is still with daily stirring. We were hesitant to try pretty litter with its marketing campaigns and celebrity commercials. It wasn’t until we couldn’t find the usual fresh step crystals that pretty litter seemed to be our only choice until we could find fresh step. We picked it up from Target. Two weeks went by and usually by this time when I go to stir the litter I know it’s time to change it because the smell is usually strong, but to my surprise, I didn’t smell anything. I left it to see how long it would last. I left it another week, and then finally chose to clean and change out the litter because the crystals didn’t seem to be absorbing as well, but the smell was just mild compared to the other litters. With this machine it only needs half of the pretty litter bag each time, so one bag lasts about 6 weeks!

I have bought this cat box 4 times over the past two years. It does make the job of scooping the cat poop easier, but you would think with the cost it might at least work for a full 12 months. The latest one which was purchased on Jan 29th of this year (today is 9/10) is stilling there with the rake midway back, green light on but never moving. I have fussed with it all week...tried various things all the way down to turning off and unplugging to see if it would reboot like a computer....no joy in Poopville. I am now faced with either buying a 5th catbox in a two year period or going back to hand scooping the poop. Love my fuzzy face, but not so much the poop. Why cant this thing handle the task for at least 12 months? I am broke and desperate.
No more scooping cat turds! Hooray!

I was sick and tired of scooping a litter box for the past months. My cat takes to anything like a duck to water, so I found this LitterMaid for $75 and some change and decided it was the cheapest I’ve seen and to go for it. The unit arrived in a plain box, but everything was inside and perfect. I’ve had it a little over a month now, and I have tried 15 different types of litter, and I found one that works 98% of the time when the litter level is low, and 100% if I keep a close check on the level and refill it as necessary. That being said, it’s the Arm&Hammer Slide clumping litter (for me) (buy on Chewy and save) that has proved to work best with the LitterMaid. I go through about one box per month with the LitterMaid. It also keeps the odors (while deposits are in the 15min until being scooped period) from smelling. Overall, this box paired with the Slide litter is the best. I’ve not had to scoop cat turds in a month! Now, you will occasionally, maybe once every other week, have to clean the rake- or scoop around and make sure no urine is pooled and clumped on the bottom (the slide litter doesn’t stick, so it’s easy to scoop up) that the rake can’t get up, but I’ve noticed so many want to bi*ch about this small task, face it- it's doing 90%+ of the job for you, maintaining it is a small task. Deal with it! I change out my litter every month to be completely fresh when I have to buy a new box of the A&H Slide Litter and wash and clean my litter tray holder and rake when necessary. Also, do yourself a favor- if you have $75-$115 to spend on a litter box- don’t cheap out and reuse the receptacle trays, new receptacle trays as well as the carbon odor catcher filters (make sure it’s the flat top receptacles (3rd gen) and not the others with the weird tabs on the top) have proven to eliminate all of the smell. It takes around a full week for my receptacle to get full, so one box of replacement receptacles (12 count) does last two months for me. Unless somebody goes into my bathroom and sees the box, they don’t really know I have a cat. Hope this is helpful for anyone on the fence! If my opinion changes, I’ll update the review. So far, so good! Update: After using this litter maid litter box for months now- just take my word for it- buy it! Never been so pleased! It is worth EVERY cent I spent. Update: 3/7/2023: The Litter Maid is still performing great! After a few years of usage, I did have an issue with the internal connector coming loose, but some scotch tape and a stapler fixed that issue. My only issue I’ve come to notice is sometimes it does waste litter into the bin, and it seems to get louder as it ages with use, which it completely fine since it does a great job. May replace it and use as a back up once I find a good deal on a Litter Robot. But for now, if you want a decent litter box that works well 98% of the time, BUY IT! You won’t regret it!

I have an older version of this automatic cat litter and the old one worked so much better than this "new" version. I did like the change for the waste receptacle, that was a better design than the older version, but the top of the waste container, keeps moving around, it should have something else to better keep it in place. I am very disappointed with this purchase, it does the job, but not like the old one. It makes this weird noise (which is what the other one was doing in the last days until it stopped working) like all the time, so you may think something is wrong and it is just noisy and I don't even know if it is defective or it is just like that. It does not pick up all clumps if they are lower than the rake, it is constantly leaving the waste receptable lid wide open so the smell spread all over until I realized it didn't close properly when doing the cleaning after use, it doesn't happen all the time but it should not happen at all unless you have not realized that it is time to replace the waste container. I believe that anything that costs more than $75 should work just as advertised, but it does not. Also, I used the recommended litter from their brand and it was a disaster, so don't waste your time and money on that. Somehow, it is always keeping pieces of the waste in the border instead of dumping the whole thing in the receptacle so that could be a design flaw that the other didn't really have as much. Also, due to the darker color, the dust from the litter is all over the place, it does not look clean with that mess, I'm just not happy at all, I think the older version, even though it was not perfect, worked so much better than this thing. It also lasted like 3 years and this one, I can't wait to get rid of it. I feel they changed some stuff to make it cheaper, but it is not getting the job done. So, I already order the little robot 3 and I can't wait to replace this awful thing.
The worst purchase I've ever made- the hardware holding the rake on is thin, cheap plastic

I bought this unit when it was $140 and it worked so good that I recommended it to my brother and he bought one too. Then after about six months of usage the claw/rake started vibrating and only moving forward a few inches and then returned to the back of the box. So I cleaned it really well and then tried operating it again but without any litter in the pan and it did the same thing. So I decided to take the rake off and clean it even though it appeared to be clean. I pushed in the button on one side and it released but the other side wouldn't release when I pushed in the button the same way. So I emailed the manufacturer and they suggested pushing in a bit harder so I did and the hardware popped out and broke- there's a small screw on each side but the rest of the hardware that holds the rake on is a small plastic retention clip and a spring. I emailed the manufacturer again to ask if I could get a replacement for the small plastic pieces that broke and they never replied. So I attached one side with the hardware and Gorilla glued the rake to the mechanism but it comes apart every few weeks and has to be glued back on. Meanwhile my brother's rake assembly had already started vibrating even worse than mine did and it wouldn't move at all after about four months of usage. If they had used small metal hardware instead of thin plastic then the rake probably would have worked for at least a few years. So now we have two of these that are essentially $140 regular litter boxes. One of the worst purchases I've ever made.
Here's a REAL review from a NORMAL person

This litter box works well, however, there are a couple things you MUST do if you want it to work well. 1. MUST BUY HARD CLUMPING LITTER!!! It must specifically be a "hard" clumping litter. I initially bought the Arm and Hammer Platinum Cloud Control litter and quickly found out that it wasn't going to work. The litter was like sand and coated the poop/pee but never hardened, so when the rakes would go to pick it up, little chunks would fall through or it would flatten out and stick to the edge of the pan as the rake was lifting it. up. The rake will engage shortly after the cat uses the litter box, approx 15 minutes, so the litter needs to be quick absorbing and fast acting hardener. It doesn't have to be anything fancy...Arm and Hammer Double Duty seems to be doing really good. 2. The waste compartment is small and the receptacles are a rip off, so plan on buying litter bags to line the receptacle, or better yet, put the litter box on top of a storage tote, cut a hole through the top of the tote lid right where the waste would fall, then cut out the bottom of the receptacle and lined it with an 8 gallon trash bag, and finally push the remaining bottom part of the trash bag through the hole in the tote lid where all the waste will fall. You can find videos on how to do this on YouTube. It's awesome and works like a charm. Instead of emptying the receptacle every day, i probably empty it once a week, and it doesn't smell at all. Once you have good clumping litter and the receptacle issue figured out, there's not much else to do other than clean it out once and a while. I really wish it was larger since i have 2 cats, and they might have a larger one for multiple cats, but that might just be me "thinking" they need to do their business in a larger area - not a deal breaker. Overall, I'm really happy with this litter box. I really like how you can manually trigger it to run by flipping a little switch on the top to off and back to auto. If my cat takes a really gross dump and I want it gone ASAP, i can flip the switch back and forth, and it immediately starts running. Just make sure your arm doesn't trip the sensor otherwise it'll think there's a cat doing it's business and cancel the job.
Gets the job done, but…

I bought the single-cat, 3rd generation litter maid for my adult male cat. It gets the job done, but there’s a few cons. You can decide if they outweigh the pros: Pros: 1) Less time spent cleaning up litter. I only need to do a full litter change 1-2x a week. 2) Cleaner scent in the immediate area of the litter box vs a normal litter box. The charcoal filters and waste receptacles help with this quite a bit. 3) Fairly easy to use— has a switch for ON, OFF, or “clean” mode. In clean mode, it will take the litter, then leave the rake perched at the waste receptacle so you can scoop/sift anything it missed. In on mode, it will clean automatically clean after sensing your cat (once the sensors don’t pick up movement for several minutes, so your cat won’t get traumatized by the robo-thingie while it is still trying to do its business). 4) when you’re ready to do a litter switch, the top portion detached from the bottom, making it easier to dump. 5) when the receptacle is full, you can literally reuse it a second time (just dump the contents and place back), or replace with a new one. I don’t recommend reusing more than once. To remove it, all you have to do is pull it out from the front (after detaching the ramp), and the lid will slide out with it. Cat doo in a neat little package. Cons: 1) The rake doesn’t do a fantastic job, so I do still have to do maintenance of the litter box each day (clean mode comes in handy, here). Pro tip: Use a really good clumping litter and overfill just a smidge! If you don’t have enough litter in there, you’ll find little clumps stuck at the bottom (where the rake can’t reach) when your cat goes number one. 2) Not all waste receptacles are a match. Beware of ordering/purchasing the right ones or you will NOT be able to use it with the litter box. Buying at a pet store is also pretty costly, I find the best deals online. 3) No matter what, there’s gonna be litter on the track. This can be annoying, and requires some extra attention. 4) The motor sounds weak. It hasn’t slowed down after two months of use, but I’m certain at some point it will go out. You get what you’re paying for, here. Overall, this is definitely superior to a regular litter box. My house doesn’t smell like cat pee/litter unless I forget to change the waste receptacle (1-2 x a week). My cat took maybe two days to start using it. He’s still very cautious of it, but also curious. If you’ve never had an auto litter box, definitely leave you regular one as an option and phase out so your cat has time to acclimate.
