Very effective after Wildfires and with Pet Dander/dust.
By DeAnna M on Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2020
It's large so effective in big rooms. It's sensitive and uses a large but discrete light to show when air is less than optimal. Ours goes from blue (good aq) to yellow when the cat walks by it or uses the litter box. We have found that ours doubles as a pleasant nightlight. I find it amazing and I've had no sore throat since we set it up 5 days ago. I can't believe the difference already. I purchased two as I live in a two-story farm home. I have foster critters galore. It is amazingly quiet!! I do not use the sleep mode as I prefer a little soft brown noise at night. It's just...so quiet!! I'm as surprised at that as I am how effective it is. Most importantly, we experienced the horrid wildfires in Oregon this September and I was using the homemade box fan filtering set up at first in a pinch. Air quality was off the chart as you would expect. It's been 7 weeks since the fire hit. We've struggled with odd respiratory/throat and a random sharp dry cough since. These symptoms no longer exist when I'm at home. But do at work which tells me these machines are doing something remarkable. I would highly recommend spending the $$ on these. It's well worth it to us so far. Amazing really. I do use the first thin pet filter *which they include 12 of these inside the box when shipped*. There are a total of 4 different types of filters in the machine once you set it up, which is EASY. All included to get you through the first two or three months at least. Two are washable (1-semi think carbon, 1-thin nylon{?} mesh), the paper filter is thick and very effective and will need to be replaced but it says they can last up to 12 months which mine will obviously not do. I'll update the post when it. needs changed. Finally, The paper thin fibrous filter for pet hair/dander filter which as stated above, comes with 12 of these and I'm sure I will go through these fast. No matter. It's totally worth it so far! Just checked filter two that is in the busiest part of the house. ALL filters still look like new almost a week later. YaY! These also have a 'dust' sensor which is nice.

It's ok, but... No remote. Heavy. Plasmawave?
By Amazon Customer on Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020
This is a big, bulky machine. I have the previous version of this from 5+ years ago, and it's all around smaller though I believe this newer model has better CADR numbers. The old one still works btw. THIS HAS NO REMOTE. Crazy talk. The previous version has a remote and it's so convenient to change settings. Why they would get rid of the remote is baffling. Maybe because it's recommended to keep these gadgets on all the time. But I like a good remote. Bright lights! This air quality indicator light, you can turn them off by holding the sleep button down for 3 seconds. But if you don't, there is a color coded light system to tell you if the air is good (blue), orange, and some other color. The blue and orange I've seen are BRIGHT! Also I noticed that when I do turn it off, it seems to inadvertently? turn the sleep function ON too because it'll go from manual low setting I choose to Sleep mode about an hour after I've turn off the air quality indicator light. Not what I want to happen. Right now my cranky cat has fallen asleep on my lap and I really wish there was a remote so I can turn off the annoying air quality indicator light. Grrr Plasmawave. I've read about 5 different posts as well as the Winix website about how it conforms to ozone regulations. Unfortunately I didn't know about the controversy over ozone and air purifiers until yesterday. Anyway, if you fall into the category of people who my be very susceptible to even small traces, definitely do some research on the matter. Also, these extremely low levels might be fine for the average human, but what about our little floor sniffing pets? If I had known about this, I probably would not have bought it. Also, there is a button so you can easily turn off the Plasmawave function, but someone asked does this guarantee there's no negative/positive ion business anymore from this? Good question. Winix? I started the return process with Amazon and then changed my mind because researching a replacement became a daunting task as did packing and taking this beast to UPS drop. Overall, I don't have a strong dislike or like for it. Hence the lukewarm 3 rating. It seems to do the job. With all the bad air from wildfires it's pretty much on all the time. What I've Learned: Knowing that I don't care about the active charcoal feature (I read somewhere it takes a LOT of charcoal to really make a difference) and don't turn on the Plasmawave, I should have just focused on a model with: 1) HEPA filter, 2) strong CADR number, 3) meant for slightly bigger room size (this is for 300 sqft) so that you could use in a smaller room on low and it'd work well but be quieter, 4) have a remote :P and 5) no ozone release - not even if it conforms to state/fed regulations. The noise level for low and medium I sleep through with no problem. Good luck on your search!
