Purrfect Man Cave for my Cat!
By Kat E. on Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2021
First off I would like to address the odor issue. I almost did not purchase it by the reviews of people saying the chemical smell was horrific. My bed had a very and I mean very faint smell to it. My engineer husband explained this is called out-gassing or off-gassing, similar to new car smell which fades in time. The plastic in the outer part of the bed dries first and then the center dries which causes the smell. It does go away and it is not dangerous. I need to repeat the smell was barely noticeable and is now gone. I must have looked ridiculous sniffing the bed all over. Next point reviewers complain about is it doesn't get hot enough. At first the heated cushion doesn't feel overly warm. When my cat decided to finally emerge (he literally jumped right in when I set it up) It was nice and warm to the touch. You do not want to cook your cat. This is just 4 watts, very low heat but it raises the temperature to where cats are super comfortable, cozy, warm and safe. It is well made and it wasn't hard to zip together, just lay each piece side by side. I absolutely love it! There is plenty of room, my cat that claimed it is a big boy, he was able to sit up inside the pod to groom himself and while lying down there was plenty of room for him. A wonderful safe retreat most cats will adore. 2 of my 4 furbabies have been in it and the other 2 are more cautious but I know they will give it a try. I have different versions of K&H heated beds all over my house and the cats adore them as much as I do. I highly recommend this cool looking pod!

All is good besides the smell.

EVA odor is not toxic, which is why I have not thrown the thing away yet. Still, if the odor is strong and persistent, some sensitive people (and cats) can be put off. This is how my fight with the smell has gone so far, for about a month and a half. First, I put the product in my laundry dryer (wrapping up the zip puller not to damage the drum of the dryer). I first used medium heat for 30 minutes – the smell was still there. Next, I spayed the bed inside and out with 1% solution of acidic acid making it noticeably wet, and put it again in the dryer for 40 minutes on maximum heat. Most of the smell seemed to go away, only to return in a day or two to the extent my cat (and I) did not like. Finally today, I washed the whole thing with concentrated Tide manually with a brush for about half hour, rinsing it off for another half hour. Then it went back to the dryer for 30 minutes on maximum and 10 minutes air cool. I did not perceive the smell of the plastic, only some hint of the detergent, which my cat is used to. Now, two hours later I can sense the odor is back by a tiny bit. If the smell comes back again in a considerable amount in a couple of days – which is not likely, I think – I will have to dispose of the heated bed (saving the heating element and pillow I can use in other cat beds). Are the three stars I am giving for now too many? I like the design and functionality of the bed. Some people compare the smell to that of a new car. I guess, it depends on the car, but I would not buy a car that smells like that (I would replace even a rental for that matter). I do not consider myself too picky – my house environment maintenance is just keeping it mold and dust free at the relative humidity not exceeding 65%, in the temperature range of 63 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I can stand various non-toxic smells (has never been allergic to any), but I am way better off without any noticeable smells, much like most people. Cats can be more sensitive. I recommend thorough washing prior to offering this thing to your cats. Addressing K&H Pet Products, If you are on top of this manufacturing process – move your chemical engineer to outdoor products for a better replacement.
