Great toy. We have a lot of fun trying new things with the different blocks and mechanisms.

Works ok as a secondary block kit

This Baby Einstein Curious Creator Wooden Discovery block kit is ok, but maybe not for 12+ months. It's probably better suited to about 30+ months. The kit comes with square, rectangle, and triangle wooden blocks. Some are painted in primary colors and others are just "wood" color. They are probably big enough to not be a swallowing hazard, but I would still watch a child under 24 months very closely if they put a lot of things in there mouth. With supervision, the blocks are fine for a 12+ month old. There are also plastic pieces in the kit that work with the blocks. They include a wind-up dial, an arch, a large wheel, a car wheel set, and a spinner. The wind up dial is just that, you wind it up in one direction, let go, and it releases and spins in the opposite direction. The arch doesn't really work to stack blocks on it because there are wavy patterns on the top that prevent the blocks from staying there. It would have been a lot more fun if the wavy patterns were instead steps the size of the blocks so they could be stacked. You can invert the arch and put blocks at the ends of the inverted arch, though. The large wheel has a clip to hold one square block, but then rolling the wheel has an awkward, unbalanced weight to it. The car wheels come as 2 pieces, each piece has two wheels and a clip. So to make a car, a child has to place a rectangle piece into the clip on each end. It falls apart easily and is difficult for a 24 month old to put together. I'm guessing a 30 month old is the earliest a toddler could probably put that together consistently. The spinner piece has a wooden block permanently attached to a clip. A second block can be added to the clip so that it spins. In conclusion, I probably wouldn't recommend this kit as a stand-alone block kit for a toddler, especially if you only have a 12 month old. If you have a 24+ month old, though, it can work nicely as a complementary, secondary block kit.
