Great educational technology for my 7 year old boy
By mehran on Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2020
I was a little hesitant to buy this roybi robot because of mixed news I read about voice recognition. But my son who is now 7 was persistent in getting this and I am very happy we did. The day the robot arrived, my son could not stop jumping and screaming in excitement. I got this for him as a surprise so he was overly excited. And now he sleeps with his roybi while listening to bedtime stories. I am planning to use this for homeschooling for the next academic year. We’ve been working with roybi for the past 3 weeks or so and I wanted to share my experience here. Installation: The out of the box experience was fantastic. The product is very elegant and the packaging looks great. They seem to have thought about every detail and the most interesting part is it comes with an adoption certificate. My son really liked it. The installation was very easy. We just turned the robot on, installed the app, and asked for a qr code to scan. Then we were ready to play the lessons. Lessons and content: The content was a little basic in the beginning but my son enjoyed it. It started asking him questions like his favorite food, color, etc and shared its own favorites. I guess this is the way they encourage children to get to know the robot. I thought it was cool. We only see 2 weeks of lessons at a time but after we finish those more lessons load. After the second week, we started seeing content become more complex. So far we learned currencies, holidays in different countries, types of music, and more. So far, I feel the content is good and gets the attention of my son. He normally has so much energy and doesn’t sit down. The only time he sits down and pays full attention is when he interacts with roybi. Voice recognition: The technology is good for us. I do notice that sometimes it does not recognize what my son says in the first try and then it gets it next time. We also tried to replay those lessons and then it worked. My thought is the technology gets better after a while. It is not a big deal for us because we also practice patience and listening when we learn with roybi. It turned out to be a great practice time for us. What’s missing: I hope the company adds more stories and allows us to play past content. I contacted their support and he said this feature will be added soon. Great customer service and they respond very fast even on the weekends. Also, I really hope they add a feature to add my own lessons for my son.

I am very upset with myself for not trusting the reviews. Such a waste of money. I got this for my granddaughter who is autistic with hopes that it would help her but that’s impossible to do if it don’t work. 1. She pushes the hidden button IF it works it constantly says “downloading the content please wait” 2. Her father changed it from 5 GHz to 2.4 Still doing the same. 3. Not being used and sitting at the table every few minutes it says “we are now in Roybi’s world” so I have to turn it off. 4. Looked on the app trying to find things that would help her with her learning and It just keeps loading and reloading and most is above her level. 5. It says it’s for 3yrs to 8 which is why I got Roybi. From what I read it was designed with Autistic children in mind. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! 6. When she speaks to Roybi it can’t even hear her and keeps repeating the question. And she has literally screamed trying to get it to hear her. On their website it says “ We're developing an exciting pilot program for students on Autism Spectrum, ADHD, and Speech Disorder.” trust me when I say it is NOT Roybi! It also says “ If your school offers programs for special needs children, we would love to work with you!”. Well her school does and they will not answer any of my messages to help so I’m feeling like this is absolutely not true. I am very upset not just cus I waisted my money but I feel this is very false advertisement. My granddaughter was so excited to learn with Roybi and it only let her down. That upsets me more than the money 😡 Giving it a one star is not what it deserves except I did receive it packed well. Amazon needs a — ⭐️

Great for learning Chinese with Culture!

My boys love Roybi! They especially love the responses he gives when they turn him upside down. I love how easy it is to get the lessons downloaded on the App, and the little bite sized Chinese lessons are short enough that my boys don’t lose attention, while still teaching them enough new words per lesson to be worth it. They’re also short enough that repeating them for review doesn’t bore my kids. Having the words spoken by a native speaker of Standard Mandarin is also very important. The battery life of Roybi is also fantastic! He got put aside while we were gone for the Holidays, and after a month, still had plenty of battery!
What a disappointment!!

I was so excited to get this for my grandkids! It is cute, but then I found out that they each needed their own! Now that I have them, they don’t work unless plugged in AND you need separate accounts for each one. Not sure why the battery life is even a question? It won’t run on battery! They can’t take it with them anywhere or even unplug! Definitely not worth $100!! Such a disappointment!! So, update, there is a button that is under the hat, that you can't see!! WTH?? So, it can be used when unplugged, but it is so difficult to use that the kids can't do it on their own. It is not user friendly! So far they seem to get the same lesson, for science, over and over. With the delay to respond and the fact that it is hard of hearing, it is just too difficult for a child to use! So disappointed!!
Not ideal if you have more than one child

My children have shared that it is an entertaining novelty toy. I've heard them giggling and enjoying it. I think there is tremendous potential with this toy but also a couple drawbacks. It is a little difficult to clearly hear the pronunciation of the words sometimes. I could hear my children struggling to repeat words a few times because they could not really understand the robotic voice. The other drawback is that, at this time, you need a separate email for each robot to work for each child. I haven't navigated this set up yet but was provided with the direction from the company. It would be so much easier to have one profile with multiple kids set up. I purchased language lessons for my kids and am now concerned that I may have to purchase more than one time. For the last day it has also said that it is still downloading the language purchases. I need to look into it further. If the interactive language lessons do not function then in native language this toy feels like it is for a younger child...perhaps 6 and under. The lessons so far have been on material they are already familiar with at 7 and 9. For this reason I also think that I prefer the YOTO Player. Also, it may be helpful for purchaser to know that the robot comes with different color accessories or what my kids call "hat" options. You don't pick a color when you purchase but change the silicone hats. There are three color options. We've only had them a couple of days so will see how it goes from here.
My son is not interested in it.

I loved the idea, my son didn’t. I wish he would so he could take advantage of the leading opportunities.
Great and fun learning toy for my kids

I bought ROYBI Robot for my 2 year old and 6 year old sons. My 2 year old loves it. He plays with it every day mostly dancing to the songs and stories. My 6 year old has learned a lot about animals, dinosaurs, emotions and more with this toy. Since I bought it, I’ve seen more lessons every month. I’m also an IT person so privacy was important to me. This toy has done a good job with privacy and security. I highly recommend it to parents.
Good content, but bad execution

Good things: - a lot of contents and duration of each is short enough for toddlers before they lose interest. - contents are easily accessible. Just press a hidden button then the class will start. - portable and easy to hold. My kids’ first instinct is to hold it in hands and scream at it. - hidden button. - cute appearance - no touch screen. The kids are supposed to use voice only to interact and not distracted by touch screen or too much things moving on screen. Bad things on hardware and software execution: - you need to wait for a few seconds before the “lip” logo appears so that the robot will start listening. This is a very anti-social training. It will be overly weird to do so during a real human to human interaction. - the lip logo location is awkward. - The mic on my device can’t reliable pick up my voice (I’m an adult). The seller (Roybi) replied and offered help or replacement. I would give the benefit of doubt to Roybi, and that maybe it is just the problem of the robot i received. - when the robot can hear me, it takes some time to understand me. Don’t expect it to be as fast as Alexa. - the robot’s voice is unnatural. It has an obvious synthetic machine voice. - poor screen. The viewable angle is like at most 60 deg I’m afraid. Screen size is ok though and suit for purpose. Privacy concerns: I’m dubious about how much effort Roybi would spend on safeguarding privacy that: - They use Alibaba cloud for AI. Their founder explicitly spoke in an Alibaba cloud ad on YouTube. - use Facebook messenger for live chat support. There are many ways to do live communications but they choose facebook. - facial recognition are probably done not on-device. (At least they haven’t clarified when i asked in the Q&A). So if you opt to use facial recognition for your child, the face is probably sent to the cloud, not to say that the camera is continuously streaming to the cloud for the real-time face recognition to work. Conclusion, good education content, good product design, poor hardware and software execution, uncertain privacy effort (which is a deal breaker for me)

It was working at the beginning. I wish it would work better. Right now it is just an expensive paper weight. I got it so my son can have a conversation with it. It has to repeat himself 3 times or more. I purchased the Spanish program the bot has not updated at all. It ignores my commends. It seems like it would have been a great item. I would not recommend it.
