Excellent Item

For around $100, this is an excellent item for children, around the tree, outside on a deck or patio. The train runs perfectly forward/backward on the track and the functions work great (sound). We bought extra track and turnouts because I do custom modeling and plan to make this set much more stunning in a 1/18 scale layout. The train negotiates the turnouts perfectly by removing the screws.. The train itself opens and closes the turnouts and causes the direction to change in a looped formation. If you just want an excellent around the tree or outside train that any kid can operate - then this is the one!

Frustrating, cheaply constructed, VERY LOUD and no volume control.

I'm typing this on Christmas Eve. My needs were simple - I just wanted a cool train to do laps around my tree on Christmas morning. As an adult, I had no problem spending $125 for one with the Lionel name because I figured "that means quality". I was wrong. First off - when the locomotive powers up, it beeps. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP, endlessly. It does not stop until you turn on the controller. The beeping is hilariously loud. I was trying to sneak the train under my tree and literally dove on the engine to try to silence the beeping before it woke my kids up on the other side of the house. Google "Lionel locomotive beeping" and you'll see. What in the heck? Why on earth is this sound so loud? Secondly, there's no way to turn the engine sounds down on this model. I watched every Youtube video for other remote, tried the Lionel IOS app (which doesn't work at all), looked high and low for something in the owners manual - nope, nothing. Some remotes let you hold the sound button as a "shift" and use the knob to turn the volume down. Not this one - you're getting MAXIMUM VOLUME TRAIN NOISE all morning long. Even worse is the connection between the track and the cars. The wheels on the train cars are SUPER cheap and fiddly. It's a 5 minute ordeal just to get the 4 cars seated correctly so the train doesn't instantly derail. There is NO chance that my 6 year old will ever be able to get the cars back on the track if he bumps them, sneezes around them, or looks at them the wrong way. The track is just as bad - mine is on a brand new hardwood floor - perfectly level, no bumps, no seams, nothing and the cars just will not stay on the thing. Even at the slowest speed possible it's derail city almost every time. Compouding all of this is that for $125 they couldn't throw in some batteries. This is 3 cheap cars, some plastic track and a locomotive. They couldn't make this thing rechargable for $125? Or at least the remote? The remote that - by the way - you can't use the train without. There's no "on" mode for it to just let it ramble aroudn in circles for a few hours. Nope, the remote (separate batteries) must be on for it to work at all, otherwise it will stop and go into UNSTOPPABLE BLUETOOTH PAIRING BEEPING MODE. BEEP BEEP BEEP. I never in a millon years though I'd spend two hours setting up a kid's train set to go around my Christmas tree. Parents - DO NOT BUY THIS THING. One of the most frustrating purchases I've ever had on here. This thing is absolute rubbish.
