Quiet, high-quality air purifier

This is my second BlueAir purifier; I've loved both of them. The 7470i is attractive, solidly built, and very quiet -- at first I wasn't sure it was working until I felt the breeze coming from its vents. It does a great job removing the stale smell from my home office in the basement and it seems to remove a lot of dust from the air. It has a colorful touch-screen control panel on the top that shows what the purifier is doing. If you connect it to the internet (which is optional and, to my mind, a bit overkill) you can control the purifier and view its status with a phone app. I don't really use the app very often but it does show the remaining filter life, etc. The app does come in handy when it reminds me to vacuum the purifier's pre-filters and so on. It's really easy to vacuum the 7470i's pre-filters (which catch dust) and change the main filter.

Poorly engineered.

Poorly engineered unit. Most of the dust is trapped in prefilters on the sides that must be cleaned frequently. The dust that the prefilters don’t stop then pass through the fan mechanism and clog up the blades before pushing the air to the main filter element. In the 4 years I’ve owned this unit I’ve never had to replace the main filter element because all the dust accumulates on the mechanism rather than the filter. Also, the control display is almost impossible to read in direct sunlight. Do yourself a favor and find a unit that pulls the dirty air through the filter rather than pushes it.
