Best in Class
By Nate Fisher on Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2025
First of all, this is very easily the best drone on the market for $170. This review has been updated a few times. My first review was 3 stars because I didn’t fully understand the drone settings and options. Holy Stone’s incredible customer service compelled me to increase the rating to 5 stars. After that, I realized I had not changed the settings off of beginner mode, so after that change, the drone’s performance improved dramatically. Read below for details… Pros: - Camera - The camera resolution is adjustable and capable of really good images. Being able to adjust the camera angle up and down mid flight is really handy. - Recording Options - The ability to record straight to your phone or to an SD card is convenient. SD card is best because if you get out of range or have a spotty connection, the drone keeps recording. - Automated Functions - The automated functions like “automatic takeoff,” “waypoint,” “return home” and “circle” are really convenient. The fact that it remembers where it took off from and can return to that point with the press of a button is impressive. - Return Home Safeguard - The automatic return home if the battery gets low or it loses connection is a great safeguard so you don’t lose it. - Altitude/Distance - The maximum altitude and distance are really impressive at this price point—100M high and 500M away. - Case - The case this comes in is really nice. It looks good, holds the drone and all its accessories, and has a nice hard shell to protect it. - Durable - I may have crashed this drone a few times, and so far it has managed to get right back up and fly again no problem. I expected that a few of my crashes would break something, so I was pleasantly surprised. - Battery Life - comes with two batteries and two chargers which is convenient. The batteries last about 20 minutes each with heavy use, so it’s a pretty good amount of fly time. I’m considering investing in additional batteries. Cons: - No Image Stabilization - the camera is fixed to the drone body with no image stabilization, so video can be pretty shaky depending on the circumstances. It will be very difficult to accomplish those smooth aerial videos you see in films and advertisements. The less windy it is, the better in this case. Movements in general tend to be shaky when recording video, but with practice you can make it smoother. Unfortunately, adjusting the camera up and down is jerky and not a smooth action. - Automatic Follow Unstable - the “automatic follow” function is okay, but it’s not stable enough to use for a bike ride, snowboarding, or kayaking. The drone struggles to keep up and maintain position behind you, and if it lags too far behind, it stops and hovers until you come back to it. Could be a huge problem if you’re snowboarding down hill or kayaking down a river—you won’t be able to get back to its range. Additionally, if you’re moving quickly while it follows you and then you suddenly stop, it sometimes flys past you and then struggles to find you again. Things you need to know: - Beginner Mode - when I first got this, I could not fly higher than 30 meters, nor could I fly very far away, and I was super disappointed. After I did some tinkering in the settings, I found “beginner mode.” It didn’t look like beginner mode was on, but I turned it on and then back off again, and just like that, I was suddenly able to fly 100 meters up and about 500 meters away! This was a game changing discovery for me and justifies the 5 star rating. - App Dependent - you absolutely must use the app on your smart phone with this. You won’t be able to fly at all without the app. - Use an SD card. You can have the camera record directly to your phone, but an SD card will be much more reliable for video.

Really wanted it to be great but ...
By Discounts and Junk Tables on Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2021
I was very excited to receive this drone. It had an above average number of positive reviews and there are several in depth videos on you tube showcasing it's features. I was looking forward to using it as both a backyard flyer to film family events and the occasional fishing kayak companion. Sadly this was not to be. The drone I received was packaged in the factory box shrink wrapped with plastic although once I opened it several of the items inside were contained in sealed bags that had been opened previously. Not a good sign for a "new" item. On functionality the drone failed on 4 critical fronts: 1. The remote would frequently disconnect from the drone even at close range. I took the drone to an isolated field fearing background wifi interference was messing with it but it would still disconnect randomly without warning and would not respond to any commands. 2. When the connection between the drone and remote was functional it was frequently plagued by input lag. When this happened commanding the drone to go up, down, left or right and would take upwards of 4 or 5 seconds for it to react. Avoiding obstacles or the ground becomes pretty tough when the drone won't respond instantly. Some lag I could understand if you were pushing max range but at 20 or 30 feet with both a fully charged drone and remote battery it should not be happening. 3. Without the GPS activated and set to manual flight mode the drone would constantly pull to the left. Despite trying to correct this with trim control adjustments this leftward pull was always present. The GPS stabilization when active would correct it but at the cost of constant motor revving lowering battery life and when the GPS signal faded due to cloud cover or trees the drone would zoom off to the left leaving me scrambling to compensate manually. (Tough to do if you are lagging or disconnected at the time) May be a rotor alignment or blade wear issue I do not know but on a new drone it should not be. 4. One of the two included battery packs would occasionally trigger a low battery alert even with a full charge. The only way to correct this was to land, remove the battery, re-calibrate and start the flight over. On one occasion the battery alert popped up on the screen and within 3 seconds the drone just shut off completely. Fortunately I was able to catch it. Given all of these issues there is no way I could trust this drone to safely fly around my yard for fear it would crash into the neighbors place and absolutely I could not trust it out over open water for photo stills. The drone's instability and unreliable function would make the dreaded splash and sink scenario only a matter of time. There were some positives. I loved the size of the drone and the carry case was really great. The noise from the brushless motors was tolerable and the included dual chargers and battery packs were a nice bonus. If it had delivered on it's promised specs I would have been happy to keep it. I believe this is hit or miss prospect. Some of these drones do seem to work as they are designed to and some do not as there are other reviewers reporting the same issues I encountered. I suspect my drone was not new but packaged to appear that way as in my RC experience these types of problems are often seen in used / refurbished quads. No accusations here just an observation on my part. Either way I have had to return it. At this price point it's not a pro model but it is also not a disposable toy and should work correctly.
