Great vaccum at a Great Price
By Ankur Raj on Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2022
I am an owner of Roborock S6 and S6 Max, in the past, I have tried various models of Roomba, but Roborock's performance is far superior to Roomba's. On one of my floors, I don't use the mop feature a lot, so I decided to give this a try. As with all Roborock products, this came in a box well packed, in overall size this is a bit smaller than the earlier versions (S6, S7) which is great as it allows it to move around the furniture more efficiently. It includes a charging base and the robot vacuum itself. There is no assembly required, just plug the base in an electrical outlet and place the robot for charging. There are a few things that are different about this vacuum than the other Roborock vacuums I have tried. First, the charging cord for a base is a bit different and has a voltage converter in the cord instead of being in the base. Second, the dustbin is built into the plate which hides it, which makes emptying the dustbin a bit painful. Overall, the build quality for this robot feels a bit lower as compared to other Roborock vacuums but that is to be expected when it is almost $250 cheaper. This vacuum offers much higher such than my S6 and S6 Max which is a big plus. I ran into challenges connecting the vacuum to the app but part of it was me not paying attention to the instructions as the setup process is a little different than the other Roborock vacuums. On the back of the big board which comes in the box installation instructions are clear but the user manual which comes in the box doesn't seem to belong to this model but to the older models. Surprisingly in the app, it doesn't show the Q5 model as one of the supported models but once I was able to follow the instructions, connectivity was easily established. Cleaning I did the first mapping run, and it very quickly mapped the floor, I felt its mapping was much more efficient than other vacuums as it didn't go along every single wall and efficiently mapped the rooms using a LIDAR sensor. I didn't feel that missing the camera created any issues with mapping, but it did bump into some low-lying obstacles. One of the big things about this robot is that it can climb shag carpets and thick doormats which most the other vacuums can't. My Roborock S6 never was able to get onto them but Q5 managed to climb them easily and clean them. The suction power on this vacuum is great and it can easily suck up large debris. A floating brush is great as it allows it to stay close to the uneven floor, especially when transitioning between rooms. One of the challenges I did run into was that its rubber side brush got entangled in the shag carpet when it was cleaning the floor and I had to come to the rescue. This is a bit of a unique situation as I have this shag carpet in the middle of the room so when trying to clean the floor around it rubber side brush gets entangled in the long bristles of the shag carpet. I had to create a virtual boundary to solve the problem which was easy. Talking of virtual boundaries, software for Roborock is superior to the competitors. The default map is good at identifying rooms and various floors, but any edits needed are easy and quick. I have used the Roomba i7 and it is miles behind Roborock software. It is easy to connect it to google home and use voice commands. I am impressed with the suction power on this vacuum, it is much more than the previous and costlier model and does a great job of cleaning the carpets. Overall, there are things that can be improved on this model but for the price, it is easily the best robot vacuum available. This product has its quirks but I will recommend it over anything else on the market.

Solid F

Edited on 8/3/24 to add that not even 4 months after purchasing this will not connect to WiFi anymore. The suction power is frankly...pathetic unless it's on turbo. I've cleaned and replaced the filter which does nothing to help. ----------------------------------------- This is my first robot vacuum. I researched for weeks and decided on this model for a few reasons. 1. It was 49% off. Had I paid full price I would not be as satisfied. 2. The filters are reusable and washable. 3. The required parts including roller brush and little spider sweeper thing are relatively affordable. The filters not so much. I thought about spending hundreds of dollars to get a self emptying unit but I like the smaller dustbin because it forces me to empty often and check sensor cleanliness, if there are any stuck items in the brush, etc. Cons - This thing is clumsy and not always very smart. But it cleans decently using the balanced suction option. For hard floors I've learned to use turbo and max to pick up all the little crumbs, cat hair, crystal litter bits, etc. on tile and laminate. If using on turbo the battery life really suffers. The options in the Roborock app are not intuitive. Even once I've set a no-go zone or invisible wall sometimes this vac still goes where I didn't want it. It just feels very basic and adding said no go zones or walls was tricky seemingly for no reason. The line must turn solid red before you can save. There is no alert if something is stuck. I heard it running in place for several seconds and went to see the problem. A cat toy was stuck but there was no alert from the actual vac or in the app. This vac requires supervision. I do like that I can map multiple levels in the app and once you create rooms you can select certain rooms to clean. Or you can set recurring routine cleaning options. I decided not to invest in a bells and whistles model given durability for all brands of robo vacs seem to be mediocre. If I get a decent 5-7 years out of this I'll be very happy. Even a solid 3-5 years is still a good investment for me. Overall, I'm still glad I purchased it. I live with multiple chronic illnesses and mental illness. The guilt/shame cycle has lessened a lot in the past week because my floors have never been swept this often before. It's not perfect and I still plan to use an actual vacuum at least once every week or two but I can see why having a robo vac can greatly improve the quality of one's life.
