I wanted to like this game…
By Amanda on Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2024
Let me preface this review by saying that my husband and I are avid board gamers and have a collection of around 100. I know that I have to lower my expectations for what makes a good game when I’m playing with my 5 year old. I thought this game sounded interesting with the theme and the idea of collecting ingredients. The collection and movement in the game is tedious. You have to land exactly on the platforms that allow you to transition up a level or else you are mindlessly circling around a level waiting to roll the magic number on the die. In the meantime you start to lose your potion ingredients due to the consequence cards. It is not very engaging and it took my daughter and I over an hour to play a two player version. I can’t even imagine having the patience to play with more than 2 players. Additionally, there are not enough potion ingredients to meet the level up requirement if you have that many players. I had to change the rules midway through the game so we could finish. My daughter isn’t interested in playing this again. The only redeeming quality is that my kindergartener had the opportunity to practice her counting skills throughout since you have to reach a certain number of points to level up. I also didn’t feel like the consequence cards were well written. I’m wondering if they were created by someone who is a native English speaker… I will say that the box is really heavy duty and the game rules come wrapped up as a scroll which fits the theme well. I can’t recommend this game unless you are really into games of luck and don’t mind spending hours on something so mindless.
