IMO, the best 4x4x4 enclosure for a jumping spider
By Mrs. G on Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2025
I purchased 2 of this model. This is the 2nd style of 4x4x4 that I've purchased for my jumpers. I like it FAR better than the first style I bought (nothing was "wrong" with it, just prefer this model). First, the extras that were included in the package-a metal scraper to assist with taking the plastic off-came in handy as I've shredded my nails peeling the film off my other enclosures. Second, included were extra rubber gaskets as well as an extra screw and nut. It's nice to have extras on hand in case you lose one during assembly, and most of the other models have not included extra parts for assembly. As far as the design/build, it was easy to put together once the film was peeled off. The scraper tool makes this a bit easier IMO. I LOVE the magnetized feeding port on top. One side screws in for security/pivot point, the other has a tiny magnet imbedded to secure the lid in the closed position. When the door is in the closed position, with the arms locked into position, there is a very tiny gap in the bottom door hinge, approx 1mm on one side, and 2mm on the other side (rough estimates) on one of my enclosures. There is no visibile/significant gapping on my second one. If you're feeding fruit flies to a younger spood, the fruit flies MIGHT be able to escape through the larger gap, but a housefly or mealworm will be too big. I WOULD NOT USE THIS ENCLOSURE IF YOU'RE STILL FEEDING FRUIT FLIES-just in case. I got my spoods at i6, and size wise, they would not be able to escape through this VERY TINY gap at the bottom door hinge. I have my i8s in each one, and they're eating houseflies, so no worries from me about that. As far as the price point, for the size, overall quality, and helpful extras included, this is my preferred style of the two different 4x4x4s I've bought. The top feeder port is far more convienent for feeding than having to open the front door on the other model I bought. While I don't regret my initial purchase-it'll suit my needs just fine, I do wish I had seen this style first. The only potential negative I've noticed while inspecting the hinge gap is that the nuts that secure the locking mechanism seem to need frequent tightening, which is easier if you attach the nuts on the OUTSIDE of the enclosure. I attached the side locks so that they'd swing down to lock rather than pivot up to lock, but my thought is that frequent movement of the locking arms is leading to the nuts loosening (which may impact the degree of gap in the lower hinge). Just my best educated guess at this assembled but not yet decorated stage.

Meh.

Functional...but save money. Get something more sturdy. My spoods were ok in them. Didn't get out...but their food (fruit flies) kept getting out through the gaps. The doors also are very inconsistent. Kept having to re-screw, but they would come loose in seconds. Cheap and easy to build though. If you've having trouble with lack of clarity (some people talked about that) be aware that there's tape on BOTH sides of all pieces.
