Not smooth hot press on the exposed side

I needed a hot press block of watercolor paper, but the exposed surface is decidedly cold press in texture. It has a canvas-like, rough surface that does not work well Rapidograph pens. The bottom surface is smooth, but the paper must be removed from the block to access it. I will have to use it with some other medium, maybe graphite or charcoal. Disappointing.
