Motion sensitive lid that rolls open and closed, 13 gallon capacity requires 4 AA batteries
By S. McCartin on Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2024
I've had a "big" trash receptacle in my kitchen for a couple of years, only problem was depending on what got thrown out those bags could be quite heavy and I'm just over that mess. I was also having quite a lot of house flies that seemed to be originating from the trash bin. I have seen exactly two trash bins with this style of lid and I really didn't like the styling of the competing product. I ordered this several weeks ago and unfortunately for me the seller chose to use usps to ship the product. The usps depot that delivers for my area has complaints against them and I was only finally able to get my item delivered after several complaints to the usps number and phone calls to Amazon (finally arrived over a week later). KUDOS to amazon they managed to get my package delivered to my door, took awhile but they did it. It was actually pretty funny, the employee that refused to deliver my package because she felt "unsafe" showed up at my mail box at one pm and the second usps truck that delivered my box showed up at one thirty pm wearing shorts and low shoes...gee doesn't sound like he was worried about a snake in my grass as the other carrier claimed to be. I can only hope that amazon's investigation of the issues with usps delivery in my area results in some attitude adjustment for the persons involved. If usps doesn't want to deal with anything too big to fit in the mailbox then they need to stop signing contracts with Amazon and others to deliver packages. When you take the garbage can out of the box make sure you upend it and check all the bits of packaging. At first I could not find the wheels that are supposed to come with this one, not sure where they were but they were on the floor after I dumped the box out. There are sockets on the bottom of the can that the wheels simply plug into. Two of the wheels have a brake and two do not, I always install the wheels with brakes on opposite sides from the other one. You will also need four heavy duty (aka alkaline or lithium) AA batteries to power the lid mechanism. There is an/off power switch next to the battery compartment if you decide you don't want to use the fancy lid for some reason (like a smart dog). Can't tell you yet how long the batteries last (There is no AC adapter option as far as I can tell, the other product I saw offered an optional AC adapter but it sort of seems like it would be counter productive to have a wheeled trash can tethered to the wall by an AC cable). I suppose it's going to mostly depend on how often the motor operates to open and close the can top. There is a switch on top and the motion sensor to open/close the lid. While I'm fairly sure that 1.2V NIMH rechargeable batteries would NOT work in this because it is a motor and designed for 1.5V, new technology has now given us rechargeable lithium ion batteries (1.5V continuous output) for around 20 dollars for four. Amazon sells several brands and capacities of rechargeable AA Lithium batteries that come with or without a charger after I see how long a set of regular AA's will last I'll probably buy a set of those lithium as I've got many uses for them not just this thing. There is a plastic ring that fits in the top of the can that's supposed to stop the bag from sliding down inside. This uses standard 13 gallon tall kitchen trash bags, I always get the "cinch sack" style bags with the pull to close style handle. You simply put the bag inside the can bring the top edge up and over the plastic ring from the inside and then tuck it all in tight, so far it seems to be holding the bag in place properly even with quite a bit of stuff in the bag. This product was pricey but it's very pretty and the wheels make it easy to move it around and the lid should help keep the flies and gnats inside the can, I find it worth the price. I think the motion sensor might be a little bit overly sensitive but it's probably just something you have to get used to, I keep mine close to the sink and sometimes just the act of reaching into the sink causes the lid to activate. A few weeks of use: you definitely have to get used to what activates the lid it's fairly sensitive, but you'll learn. The can has a plastic ring around the top beneath the roll top then there is the plastic ring that holds the garbage bag. I found it easiest to remove the full bag if you remove both plastic rings before you try to pull it out. The rings only install one way as the can is slightly narrower on one side over the other. Still happy with it, the bag holder ring mostly does a good job but I still would not stuff the bag full because it was pulling loose slowly. Remember to bring the bag up the inside of the holder ring and then fold it over to the outside for the strongest hold. I have found that the "push button" open/close will keep the top open until pushed again (see instruction sheet in the box). update: Started using rechargeable lithium batteries the end of September, just had to swap in the second set for recharging the third of December so got just over two months of use off a set of AA's. When the batteries get low, the lid will not close completely so that lets you know it's time for new or a recharge. I wouldn't say the lid opens and closes a "lot" but at least several times a day for sure when I'm using the kitchen. May of 2025 lid no longer opens, not sure what's going on tried cleaning contacts and different batteries I think something may have failed. Garbage cans sometimes have nasty stuff inside them which I think may have somehow gotten into the works through the battery compartment this would seem to be poor design for such an expensive item. I have not even had this for a year would hope it's still under warranty but I cannot find a warranty statement in the information anyplace.

Disappointing Design and Functionality
By Danny Lockwood on Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2025
I recently purchased the ELLO&ALLO 13 Gallon Kitchen Trash Can with Roll Up Lid, and it has been a disappointing experience. Motion Sensor Issues: The automatic touchless motion sensor is highly unreliable. It often fails to detect motion, requiring multiple attempts to open the lid. This defeats the purpose of having a touchless trash can and makes it frustrating to use. Roll Up Lid Problems: The roll up lid mechanism is poorly designed. It frequently gets stuck or doesn't close properly, leaving the trash exposed. This not only looks unsightly but also allows odors to escape, which is unpleasant in the kitchen. Build Quality: The brushed stainless steel finish looks nice initially, but it easily shows fingerprints and smudges, requiring constant cleaning to maintain its appearance. Additionally, the overall build quality feels flimsy, and the components don't seem durable. Wheels: While the idea of having wheels for easy movement is good, the wheels on this trash can are not very sturdy. They often get stuck or don't roll smoothly, making it difficult to move the trash can around the kitchen. Capacity and Bag Usage: Although it is advertised as a 13-gallon trash can, the actual usable capacity feels smaller due to the design of the lid and the interior space. This means more frequent trips to take out the trash, which is inconvenient. Additionally, you can only use a partial bag because once it's fuller, it's almost impossible to pull the trash out without it breaking and causing trash to spill everywhere. This makes the process messy and frustrating. Overall, the ELLO&ALLO 13 Gallon Kitchen Trash Can with Roll Up Lid has been a letdown. Its unreliable motion sensor, problematic roll up lid, poor build quality, inadequate capacity, and issues with bag usage make it hard to recommend. If you're looking for a reliable and functional kitchen trash can, I would suggest exploring other options.
