Chop Chop

Now you'll always have the perfect knife available for any situation. Well, almost any situation.

Craig passed back and forth through his aunt's empty apartment, twisting and untwisting the tie he was wearing around his finger as he did. There had to be a better explanation for Sylvia's disappearance than ruining his first night out with Danielle. There HAD to be.

"After Nestoras told me what was going on, I just didn't know who else to call," a very distraught Pamela said, still clutching a Ginsu 15 Pc Stainless Knife Set against her nightgown like she had been when he'd arrived. Danielle stood next to her, trying her best to calm her down. "I didn't mean to interrupt your date."

Craig told her it was okay. Danielle told her it wasn't a date. Both things were said at the same time, making the evening even more awkward than it had already become.

"I knew she'd been a little high strung lately, but this..." He scanned the room again. Nothing, almost no trace that his aunt had lived there other than the faint stale smell of her cigarettes. Even the ashtrays were missing. "And she didn't say anything to you? Anything at all?"

Pamela shook her head. "We hadn't been talking recently. She acted as if she was really annoyed with me lately, especially after Rod and I..."

"Wait, 'Rod?' You mean my uncle Rod, her ex-husband?"

"He was only giving me cooking lessons, Craig, I swear. But we didn't tell her because we thought she might do something rash like..." Pamela's eyes widened. "Oh. You don't think she found out do you? You don't think she moved away because of me and Rod, do you?"

Danielle wrapped her arms around Pamela shoulders. "Shh. Nobody's saying that. This disappearing act would be kind of a drastic reaction to something that innocent."

"And yet, still not outside of the realm of possibility as far as Aunt Sylvia is concerned," Craig said.

Pamela burst into tears. Danielle rolled her eyes at Craig and mouthed the words "not helping." She patted Pamela on the back and asked, "What about the knives, Pam? Did you find the knives here?"

Pamela sniffled and wiped her eyes. "When Nestoras knocked on my door, I panicked. I didn't know what to expect, so I grabbed my knife set just in case whoever took Sylvia was still here. To defend myself, you know? I thought maybe the moment some burglar caught sight of the thirteen various serrated knives, kitchen shears, and bamboo chopping block, they might flee."

"That was..." Danielle looked to Craig for a hand. He shrugged. "Good thinking, Pam. Nice work."

Craig started pacing again. "This doesn't make any sense. Why would she do this? Why would she just up and leave? And what does that 'YAM' piece of paper the super found even begin to mean?"

Suddenly, a familiar voice erupted from the apartment doorway, "It means, Craigory, that the old girl's finally gotten herself in more trouble than she can handle." All three looked up to find a woman who, outside of the simple jean and t-shirt she wore and the lack of cigarette in her hand, could have easily passed for Craig's aunt. "And when we find her, I'm going to get to rub her face in it."

Pamela's face lit up. "Sylvia?!"

Danielle looked over at Craig and arched an eyebrow. "Craigory?"

Craig squinted his eyes hard, rubbed his temples, and, through gritted teeth, said, "Hi, Mom."
