If you already had stuff where you are going, it wouldn't be as much fun to go there.
You don't travel just because you want to carry things. You do travel for you. If you could afford to buy new clothes and leave them all behind as you move on, you probably would! Unfortunately, due to the limitations of the human body and the constraints of society, you'll need socks and shirts and pants and shoes and maybe a different pair of fancy shoes and perhaps some bandages when those fancy shoes hurt your heels and a laptop and your business phone and a place to put your car keys and a camera and your lucky Pokemon you got from a vending machine at the skating rink when you where eleven and that note from your ex you always keep with you to inspire your journey forward through life and your Buddhist medallion and your copy of Eat Pray Love and your personal phone and that record you picked up at the flea market which you didn't mean to pick up but c'mon it was a once in a lifetime find and you certainly can't leave trust that to the mail what if it melts as it's shipped back home or what if it's lost so you totally need to take it with you and also a few comic books in case you get bored and a place to stash the food and water you couldn't finish on the plane and your Yankees hat and your Cubs hat in case you see that guy from work who hates the Yankees coming the other way because who wants to get beat up for supporting the Yankees you know you're not that big of a fan and anyway that guy from work is like a tank and he's got a real anger problem although he was really nice that time you lost your wallet at the loading dock and he helped you find it and come to think of it maybe you've just misjudged him and you should ask him to a Cubs game the next time they come through oh wait that's next week so you're gonna need some kinda wifi device so you can order the tickets while you're on that mountain and now you need a little piece of paper and a pen so you can write down that confirmation number and you can't forget to bring a few pretty rocks down from the hotel garden so you can remember your trip and also perhaps a field guide to bugs and plants and a roll of toilet paper because it never hurts to be sure when you're travelling, does it!
You're not gonna fit all that in a simple backpack. You're gonna need some luggage.
