"No one will say you haven't tried, Rod," said Millicent. "You've done your absolute best for … what? More than 20 years? That's a heck of a lot longer than most people would stick around, under the circumstances."
Rod sat up in the recliner and ran his hand gently over the rich upholstery. He couldn't look her in the eye. "There has to be another way. She's getting better. Really."
"For God's sake, Rod. She hired a HITMAN. She's a danger to herself and to others," said Millicent.
"That's not fair," said Rod. "She didn't know he was a hitman. She just wanted him to keep an eye on Sylvia."
Millicent leaned forward on the edge of the all-foam seat cushion and placed a sympathetic hand on Rod's knee. "Listen to yourself."
"I know! I know!" he said. His eyes were fixed on the barrel-back shaping and button tufting, but he was looking through them. "It's just … I love them. Both of them."
"You can't have both of them, Rod. It's not good for her. And at this point, it's not even clear which one is which."
"I know which is which, Millicent. I know."
Craig walked up behind and placed his hands on Rod's shoulders. "Dad. I know this is hard, but it's for the best."
Rod looked up at his son and felt a tremendous sense of guilt. It couldn't have been easy for Craig, growing up one minute with a mother who doesn't know she has a son, and the next with an "Aunt" who thinks her psychiatrist is really her sister. But despite it all, he turned out to be a pretty well-adjusted kid, and Rod was grateful for that.
"OK," said Rod sadly. "OK."
"OK," said Millicent with a half-hearted smile. "I'm going to need you to sign this paperwork first. Just write in her full legal name and then sign at the bottom."
Rod took the clipboard and pen. He hesitated for a moment, but then wrote out his wife's name.

He signed the bottom and handed it back to Millicent. Then he started to cry. Craig put his arms around his father and hugged him close.
"Don't worry. We'll take good care of her," said Millicent.
"Them," said Rod through tears. "You'll take good care of THEM."
